For 'Nip/Tuck,' one
last time on the table

Ratings will likely be modest for the series finale

More than a year after "The Shield" ended its influential run on FX, another of the network's signature dramas, "Nip/Tuck," concludes tonight at 10 p.m.

The sixth-year show goes out much like you'd expect for a program that redefined cable standards with regards to nudity (lots), blood (also lots) and really disturbing plotlines. Main characters Christian and Sean doff their shirts one last time, past lovers like Kimber and Julia reappear, and there are plenty of graphic surgeries.

The buzz online is there there's no jolting ending a la "The Sopranos," and there won't be "Sopranos"-like ratings, either. As happens for most shows in their sixth seasons, "Nip/Tuck" has seen viewership slide.

Last week's penultimate episode did not even make the week's top 50 cable shows among adults 18-49, meaning it drew less than half the then-cable-record 2.77 million the show averaged during season four.

But "Nip/Tuck" will leave more of a legacy than simply sex and surgery. It, along with "Shield" and USA's recently concluded "Monk," was among the first wave of shows that proved that basic cable could program smart, inspired fare just as well as broadcast.

Those programs cleared the way for shows like FX's "Damages" and AMC's "Mad Men," which became the first basic-cable shows to receive best drama Emmy nominations.

With "Nip/Tuck" gone, the only one of FX's defining trio of dark, edgy originals remaining is "Rescue Me," which returns later this year.
