For Kathy Griffin,
one acquires a taste

The climb's been slow for the potty-mouth comedian

Jul 24, 2007

“Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” was an instant smash for Bravo four years ago, but since then its reality hits have been slow-growers.

It took a season and a half for top-rated show “Project Runway” to really take off, and two seasons of “Top Chef” and “The Real Housewives of Orange County.”

Now there’s another show to add to that list: “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.” The show, which grew out of the comedienne’s ribald but popular comedy club routine, wraps up its third season tonight at 10 after seeing big growth in its target audience.

“Life” pulled its best-ever numbers last week, averaging a record 1.1 million total viewers and 787,000 adults 18-49, both bettering June’s then-record season-three premiere by a few thousand.

Season to date, “Life” is up 77 percent in 18-49s over season two, from 379,000 to 670,000. It’s also up almost 70 percent in total viewers, from 541,000 to 910,000.

Season two of the show debuted in April 2006 against tough competition on broadcast, and certainly season three has been helped by airing in the summer, when there’s little broadcast competition.

There’s less cable competition as well. Whereas during its last season, “Life” faced the young-skewing NBA playoffs on TNT and ESPN, as well as MTV’s “The Real World,” this year the playoffs are long over and MTV was airing a low-rated “Reunited” edition of “World.”

Griffin’s numbers may also be up because of curiosity about the turmoil in her personal life. Season three has seen her split with her husband and deal with her father’s death, tabloid fodder that certainly appeals to Bravo’s young audience.

On tonight’s finale, Griffin travels to Ireland, where she scatters her dad’s ashes.
