For 'Grey's Anatomy,'
time to sew it up

The last remaining original episode airs at 9 p.m.

Jan 10, 2008

For sure, “Grey’s Anatomy” has seen ratings declines since last season, with fans complaining about the George-Izzie-Callie love triangle and lack of forward thrust for a number of other plotlines.

But “Grey’s” remains the No. 3 show on broadcast this year among adults 18-49, according to Nielsen rankings, behind fellow fourth-year ABC dramedy “Desperate Housewives” and Fox’s “House.” And so that makes it all the more painful for ABC that tonight marks the final fresh episode of its Thursday night anchor.

No more original “Grey’s” will air until the writers return to work.

The strike necessitated some storyline alterations, with Joshua Jackson’s stint as a love interest for Sandra Oh, which was getting some buzz from TV fan sites, delayed indefinitely. But some major plots could be resolved tonight, such as George and Izzie’s failed affair and Derek’s blossoming flirtation with nurse Rose.

“Grey’s” will move into reruns next week and then surrender its Thursday 9 p.m. timeslot to the new season of “Lost” at the end of the month. Because of its serialized nature, “Grey’s” doesn’t repeat very well, losing roughly two thirds of its audience. Season to date, the show is averaging a 6.6 rating, but that would be higher without reruns.

Tonight’s episode should dominate the 9 p.m. hour in 18-49s, despite airing against fresh episodes of CBS’s “CSI,” which performs better with total viewers, and NBC’s reenergized “Celebrity Apprentice.”

The episode focuses on Dr. Bailey’s unraveling marriage and Derek and Rose’s reaction to their surprising kiss.
