For 'Deal or No
Deal,' an Olympic test

NBC game show got heavy promotion during the Games

Aug 25, 2008

“Deal or No Deal” received a lot of promotion on the much-watched, recently concluded Olympics on NBC. Tonight at 8 p.m. the game show becomes the first fall program to debut.

During his Olympic promos, host Howie Mandel promised that someone would finally win $1 million this season, and that ought to boost the show's curiosity factor for tonight's return.

“Deal” could certainly use a bump after a third season in which its numbers plummeted.

Ratings for all three weekly editions of the show slipped. Monday remained its highest-rated edition, but it was off 21 percent from the previous year, from a 4.3 adults 18-49 rating to a 3.4, according to Nielsen. Among total viewers, too, “Deal” took a dive, off 23 percent from 14.8 million to 11.5 million.

That’s one reason why NBC is reining the show in for season four. Though it debuts on a Monday, that’s mainly to give a decent lead-in to a new show premiering at 9 p.m.. “America’s Toughest Jobs,” a reality program from the producer of “Deadliest Catch.”

When the regular season begins in earnest in late September, “Deal” will air only twice a week, Wednesday and Friday, though NBC may still use it as a schedule patcher should any of its new shows flop. The break should help at least keep “Deal’s” ratings steady.

And it should do decently tonight from the Olympic promotions and lack of competition. ABC’s reality bomb “High School Musical: Get in the Picture” is the only other original on broadcast.

But it’s hard to imagine “Deal” ever getting back to the numbers it pulled only two years ago.
