For 'Chuck,' a guest
appearance of sorts

Syfy is airing a marathon of the geek-spy series

Arguably no one does corporate synergy as well as NBC Universal, where MSNBC anchors cross over to "NBC Nightly News," Universal Studios films are promoted on USA Network, and Bravo's "Real Housewives" pop up on "Today."

The latest example of that synergy comes tonight, when Syfy airs an eight-hour "Chuck" marathon starting at 5 p.m., in advance of the third-year comedy's return to sister network NBC this Sunday.

The marathon probably won't fill in all the gaps for people who missed the first two seasons, but the geek-turned-spy series doesn't have an overly complicated mythology. It could serve as a catchup for those who've never seen the series but heard about the Subway campaign that saved it last year.

"Chuck" was a bubble show after posting a mere 2.1 adults 18-49 C3 rating, or average commercial minute rating including three-day digital video recorder playback. But while NBC was mulling its future, fans organized a smart effort to save it.

They started a Facebook page encouraging viewers to order footlong subs at Subway and then drop a note of support for “Chuck” into stores' comment boxes.

Why Subway? Because the sub chain had recently received a rather obvious product placement plug on the show.

"Chuck" was ultimately renewed, and Subway came aboard as a sponsor, pleasing the bottom-line-minded programmers at NBC.

"Chuck" will premiere with a two-hour episode this Sunday at 9 p.m. before moving to its regular slot Mondays at 8.
