'FlashForward':
Can it get it all back?

ABC sci-fi show debuted to big numbers last fall

When ABC's "FlashForward" premiered last September, it had a lot going for it: great buzz, good ratings and lots of critical praise.

But the serialized sci fi show, about what happens after the entire world experiences a 2-minute, 17-second blackout, suffered a quick decline over the next three months. Its ratings plunged, its plots became less focused, and two show runners exited.

Tonight at 8 p.m. "FlashForward" returns from a three-month hiatus with its future just as uncertain as the show's characters. Whether it receives a second-season renewal will depend on whether its numbers perk up from when it went off the air in December.

"FlashForward" debuted to a 4.1 adults 18-49 Nielsen rating six months ago and beat timeslot competitor "Survivor" among young adults and total viewers. But by December, its 18-49 rating had declined to a 2.2, barely half what it premiered at.

Season to date, "FlashForward" has averaged a 2.9 rating, bumping up to 3.8 when seven-day DVR playback is included.

The big question is whether viewers who watched "FlashForward" last fall will return.

ABC has been promoting the show's second-half debut nonstop and even ran a recap of the first half of the season on Tuesday night.

But the show returns opposite the tipoff of the NCAA men's basketball tournament on CBS. It's not so much the tourney that could hurt the drama by stealing viewers--sci fi geeks aren't usually basketball fans--but the buzz factor: The hype over the tournament has pretty much drowned out anything else this week.
