Exploring the
false god of beauty

On VH1, Jessica Simpson and pals travel the globe

After pop star pin-up Jessica Simpson was roasted in the tabloids for gaining 10 pounds last year, she got upset. Then she apparently got inspired.

Tonight at 10 p.m., VH1 premieres the new show “Price of Beauty,” in which Simpson and friends Cacee Cobb and Ken Paves travel to different countries around the world and examine local standards of beauty.

On tonight’s show, a Thai woman shows how she badly damaged her skin by bleaching it. Simpson’s message: Every culture values something different, but sometimes women go too far to try to fulfill those ideals.

Simpson proved on her previous reality show, the MTV smash “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica,” that she could be flighty, flaky and often ditzy. But this show is anything but.

It’s a truly unique way to respond to her critics and say something really meaningful about our often ridiculous standards of beauty.

Simpson likely has the sympathy of every woman who’s ever sobbed when her “fat” jeans wouldn’t zip up. Whether “Beauty” will draw many of them to VH1, however, is a real question.

Simpson has done a big pre-debut push, appearing on “Oprah” last week, where she blasted ex-boyfriend John Mayer for referring to her as “sexual napalm” in an interview with Playboy.

“Beauty” faces little competition of note on broadcast, where “Castle” and “CSI: Miami” are both repeats. But its more serious subject matter seems a little odd for a network that’s best known for airing dating shows featuring formerly famous rap or metal stars.
