Bit of sizzle for
'America’s Got Talent'

Jerry Springer and Sharon Osbourne join the show

Last year NBC’s variety-reality show “America’s Got Talent” debuted to great numbers for a summer show but slowed down noticeably as the season progressed. Viewership dipped by more than a third among adults 18-49.

For season two, NBC aims to fix that problem by adding stars from two of this decade's most popular reality shows, Sharon Osbourne and Jerry Springer, to the program, raising the show’s star power. The season premiere, in which artists and oddballs of all sorts display their skills, is tonight at 9 p.m.

Osbourne, of course, starred in MTV’s one-time megahit show “The Osbournes,” which was the network’s top-rated program in the early part of this decade and even helped the rock star's wife land a syndicated talk show. But that show was canceled after one sour season, and the once-ubiquitous Osbournes have since faded from the spotlight.

Osbourne joins the talent-search show as a judge, replacing singer Brandy, who was scratched after being involved in a car accident a few months ago that killed another woman. Brandy is now busy dealing with the ensuing lawsuits.

Also new to the show, taking Regis Philbin’s place as host, is Springer, host of the NBC Universal Television Distribution syndicated talk show “The Jerry Springer Show” and the breakout star of ABC’s third season of “Dancing with the Stars.”

Springer’s talk show enjoyed a resurgence during his “Dancing” stint last fall. His clumsy cha-chas and self-deprecating humor made him a surprise fan favorite.

Springer and Osbourne’s presence could help boost “Talent,” which averaged a 3.5 in adults 18-49 last summer. Tonight the broadcast competition is light, and with no basketball playoffs on cable, “Talent” should be the night’s top draw.
