'Being Erica,'
a most unlikely story

It's a soap from Canada, airing on ABC's SoapNet

As far as concepts go, "Being Erica" has one of the most intriguing on television.

"Erica," which airs its season two premiere tonight at 10 p.m. on SoapNet, tells the story of a woman who is sent back in time every week to relive pivotal moments in her life. She has the chance to change her past actions and make a resulting change in her current life, a power bestowed by her mysterious therapist, Dr. Tom.

While SoapNet may seem an unlikely place for a critical hit, considering its limited original content and reliance on a genre generally dismissed by reviewers, "Erica's" unique conceit has helped it develop a following among writers at Entertainment Weekly, Zap2It and the New York Post.

In tonight's episode, Erica journeys back to 1998 to learn a little bit more about Dr. Tom. Like maybe why he has this power.

"Erica" originated on Canadian broadcast and was imported to SoapNet last year. The show, which is set in Toronto, has been exported to a total of 30 other countries, and it continues a trend, started during the writers' strike two years ago, of U.S. networks importing Canadian programs.

ABC ran the miniseries "Diamonds" last year, which originated in Canada, and CBS has aired two seasons of the Canadian drama "Flashpoint." Though "Diamonds" drew weak numbers, "Flashpoint" did decently, and with the networks looking for ways to save money, there could be more imports ahead if shows like "Erica" perform well on cable.

Performing well would mean outdrawing SoapNet's 2009 primetime average of 353,000 total viewers, up 9 percent over the previous year, and 164,000 adults 18-49, up 18 percent.
