BBC's 'Love Soup,'
perfect strangers

Alice and Gil are just right for each other

Aug 1, 2006

They say there’s someone out there for everyone. What they don’t say, however, is that you may not ever meet that someone. And that means an endless parade of fix-ups and second dates that rarely lead to thirds, all while the perfect man or woman lives undiscovered just down the street.

That’s the premise of “Love Soup,” the new drama premiering tonight at 10 p.m. on BBC America. Though there are also some laughs, it’s mainly about the quiet frustration of pining for love that never quite happens.

Brit Alice Chenery (Tamsin Greig) and American Gil Raymond (Michel Landes) are perfect for one another. They’ve both got odd neuroses and they date the wrong people. The catch is that they have never met despite some close calls.

The audience watches their stories unspool and sees just how perfectly they match. Alice works at the perfume counter of a department store, where she encounters creeps like the foot fetishist who has a crush on her and a real estate agent who likes to pop in on people unexpectedly. Gil, a comedy writer, recently moved to London with his girlfriend, who promptly dumped him. Now he’s trying to land a TV gig while also fending off the advances of his randy older neighbor.

Alice and Gil continue in their own separate worlds until, presumably, the season finale, when it would seem impossible to keep up this separation lest viewers revolt.

BBC America has a slew of new shows airing this month, including the spinoff “Footballers Wive$: Overtime” and “Shakespeare Retold: Much Ado About Nothing,” premiering this Sunday. All that fresh programming should continue to give the network a boost after a second quarter during which its primetime average jumped 24 percent, from an average 67,000 to 83,000 total viewers, according to Nielsen data analyzed by Turner Networks.
