At the finish, 'Biggest
Loser' adds heft

NBC reality show actually gains in its ratings

There were a lot of reality losers piling on the broadcast schedules due to the recent writers’ strike, including the quickly forgotten “My Dad is Better Than Your Dad,” lame spinoff “Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie” and the umpteenth edition of “Big Brother.”

But one reality franchise that had a very strong first quarter was NBC’s “Biggest Loser,” which wraps its fifth season tonight with a two-hour finale starting at 8 p.m.

This marked the first year that NBC ran back-to-back seasons of the show, which had its January premiere just a few weeks after its high-rated December finale. Previously, the network limited “Loser” to one season per year.

“Loser” has held up very well despite expanding from 90 minutes to two hours and airing against Fox’s “American Idol” in its first hour. In fact, it’s become one of NBC’s top-performing shows ever against “Idol” on Tuesdays, averaging a 3.4 adults 18-49 this season, up 6 percent from last fall, when it did not air against “Idol.”

Last Tuesday’s episode scored the season’s best results since January in both 18-49s and total viewers, averaging a 3.7 and 9 million, respectively.

The show follows morbidly obese contestants as they embark on a months-long boot camp with stringent diets, tough workouts and additional team challenges. This season NBC added a new wrinkle, inviting couples to compete together.

Tonight there are three finalists: Alison Vincent and Kellie Fields, plus a third finalist who will be revealed during the first five minutes of tonight’s show. Viewers had the chance to vote online for either Mark Kruger or Roger Shultz, the other remaining contestants, as that finalist.
