Ahead of Super Bowl,
a peek at the ads

CBS airs 'Super Bowl's Greatest Commercials 2012'

Yes, it's a little strange that a special called "Super Bowl's Greatest Commercials 2012" is airing on CBS tonight at 8 p.m. and not on NBC, the network that will broadcast Sunday's big game.

But while custody of the Super Bowl rotates every year between CBS, NBC and Fox, CBS has long held the rights to this annual special.

The special highlights old fan favorites and offers a preview of some of the new ads.

Leading up to the special, viewers had a chance to vote for their favorite Super Bowl ad online as well.

Their pick will be revealed at the end of the show, hosted this year by Boomer Esiason and former "The Biggest Loser" trainer Jillian Michaels, who take over for former hosts Jim Nantz and Lara Spencer.

Though the show doesn't draw huge ratings, it's certainly a capable place-filler. Airing on a Friday last year, "Commercials" averaged a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen, and was the top-rated show on a slow night.

This year's show will probably draw lower ratings. It airs opposite Fox's "American Idol," which is still a very strong draw despite its much lower viewership this year.

And past Super Bowl ads are increasingly available online, which could eventually dampen viewers' enthusiasm for the special. Hulu launched a channel of past years' ads this year, and it's possible to find just about any of them on YouTube.
