It was, as predicted, a bum World Series from a ratings perspective. Perhaps the more surprising thing was how uncompetitive the games themselves were as well.
The San Francisco Giants' victory over the Texas Rangers averaged an 8.4 household rating and 11 share on Fox, according to Nielsen, tying the 2008 World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays as the lowest-rated in history.
It was also off 29 percent from last year, when the New York Yankees and Phillies averaged an 11.7/19.
Among total viewers, the five-game series averaged 14.3 million, 6 percent better than the average 13.6 million who watched in 2008, in a series that suffered weather delays from heavy rainfall.
This year's numbers were expected to be off. Last year's matchup featured one of the most popular teams in the league, the Yankees, as well as the country's top TV market, New York, and another in the top five.
The Giants and Rangers do not have large national followings, and their markets, while still big, aren't in the top five.
But the Giants and Rangers didn't really help themselves by building compelling storylines. San Francisco won the first two games in blowouts, and no one player really stepped into the media spotlight.
