The New England Patriots just keep on winning, and that’s great news for the National Football League. With the Patriots drawing monster ratings for completing the league’s first-ever 16-0 season Saturday, the NFL postseason could be one of the most-watched ever should the team continue its torrid pace.
Saturday’s game between the victorious Patriots and the New York Giants, which aired simultaneously on NFL Network, NBC, CBS and three local-market stations, drew 34.5 million total viewers, making it the most-watched NFL game since a 1995 matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys on NBC.
The game was originally scheduled to air on only the NFL Network, which is available in just 43 million households as it engages in a long-running dispute with cable operators. But a last-minute deal between the broadcasters and the league, following pressure from Washington lawmakers hearing from constituents who did not have access to the NFL Network, made the game available across the country.
CBS led with 15.7 million viewers for the 8 p.m. contest, followed by 13.2 million for NBC. NFL Network drew only 4.5 million viewers, matching its average for seven previous games carried this year. Local stations in New York and the New England area combined for an additional 1.2 million viewers.
The Patriots became the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to finish the season undefeated, and the first squad ever to post 16 wins. The Dolphins played a 14-game schedule 35 years ago and went on to win the Super Bowl.
That’s the next task for New England, whose march through the regular season has captured the attention of the entire country. The squad has already boosted ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” and NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” to their best-ever ratings this season, and a midseason matchup with the then-undefeated Indianapolis Colts on CBS drew the network’s top viewership since regaining football rights a decade ago.
That should mean huge ratings for the Patriots as they attempt to make the Super Bowl. The squad has a first-round bye this weekend but will play in three additional games including the big one, provided they are not upset.
That may include an AFC championship game rematch with the defending Super Bowl champion Colts, who knocked off New England last year in a title game that drew 46.7 million total viewers.
That number should climb even higher this year, as viewers watch to see if New England can make history.
That could also send Fox’s Super Bowl soaring to a record number of total viewers, too. Last year’s game drew 93.2 million viewers on CBS, the second-largest audience ever for a TV show and just short of 1996’s record 94.1 million for the Pittsburgh Steelers-Dallas Cowboys matchup.
