Michael Vick’s mea culpa on “60 Minutes” last night may or may not have convinced fans that the once-vilified quarterback, who served more than a year in prison stemming from a conviction on dog-fighting charges, deserves a second chance in the NFL.
But many viewers turned out to watch him make his case. “60 Minutes” averaged a 2.6 adults 18-49 rating at 7 p.m. last night on CBS, according to Nielsen overnights, up from a 1.5 last week.
It finished No. 2 for the night in that demo, behind lead-out “Big Brother.”
“Minutes” averaged 12.1 million total viewers , finishing first for the night on that measure.
Vick was in the news leading up to the interview. The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback signed with the Philadelphia Eagles last week, setting off a storm of controversy in the sports world, where many are divided on whether the one-time Pro Bowler deserves a second chance.
“Minutes” wasn’t the only show seeing big gains last night. ABC’s “Shark Tank” was up substantially, 38 percent, versus last week’s debut, from a 1.3 to a 1.8.
The reality show, which airs at 9 p.m., was likely helped by the lesser competition. Last week NBC aired a preseason football game; last night it aired a low-rated “Saturday Night Live” repeat.
CBS was first for the night among 18-49s with a 2.0 average overnight rating and a 6 share. Fox was second at 1.9/6, ABC third at 1.4/4, NBC fourth at 0.9/3, Univision fifth at 0.6/2 and CW sixth at 0.3/1.
As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-two percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.
At 7 p.m. CBS led with a 2.6 for “Minutes,” followed by ABC with a 1.4 for a repeat of “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” Fox was third with a 1.0 for repeats of “'Til Death” and “The Simpsons,” NBC fourth with a 0.8 for “Merlin,” Univision fifth with a 0.5 for “Hora Pico” and CW sixth with a 0.2 for a repeat of “Easy Money.”
CBS was first again at 8 p.m. with a 2.7 for “Brother,” with Fox second with a 2.3 for repeats of “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.” ABC was third with a 1.5 for “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” NBC fourth with a 0.9 for more “Merlin,” Univision fifth with a 0.5 for the first half of “¡Hazme Reír! Y Serás Millonario” and CW sixth with a 0.4 for the first hour of the movie “Disturbing Behavior.”
Fox took the lead at 9 p.m. with a 2.4 for another hour of “Family Guy” repeats, while ABC moved to second with a 1.8 for “Shark Tank.” CBS was third with a 1.5 for “There Goes the Neighborhood,” NBC fourth with a 0.8 for a repeat of “Saturday Night Live Presidential Bash 2008,” Univision fifth with a 0.7 for the end of “Millonario” and CW sixth with a 0.4 for its movie.
At 10 p.m. CBS and NBC tied for first at 1.1, CBS for a repeat of “Cold Case” and NBC for more “SNL.” ABC was third with a 0.8 for “Defying Gravity” and Univision fourth with a 0.6 for “Quien Tiene la Razon?”
Among households, CBS finished first for the night with a 4.9 average overnight rating and a 9 share. ABC was second at 3.3/6, Fox third at 2.4/4, NBC fourth at 2.1/4, Univision fifth at 0.8/5 and CW sixth at 0.6/1.
