How appropriate: Two days before Halloween, the CW's new drama "The Vampire Diaries" sank its teeth into a new series high.

"Diaries" averaged a 2.3 adults 18-34 rating last night, according to Nielsen overnights, its best ever. It also matched its series high among women 18-34, averaging a 3.1 rating and finishing second to Fox in its 8 p.m. timeslot.

The show drew 4.2 million total viewers, its best average since its premiere.

The network did a special text messaging promotion to hype the episode, which could have helped ratings, as could more people tuning in because of the upcoming holiday or the World Series interrupting usual Thursday viewing patterns.

Fox dominated the night with baseball, as expected, with game two of the World Series averaging a 5.8 in adults 18-49, the best game two since 2006, and 18.9 million total viewers, best game two since 2004.

Fox led the night among 18-49s with a 5.3 average overnight rating and a 14 share. ABC was second at 3.8/10, CBS third at 3.5/9, NBC fourth at 2.4/6, CW fifth at 1.7/4 and Univision sixth at 1.3/3.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-three percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

Also, ratings for Fox’s World Series coverage are approximate as fast nationals measure timeslot and not actual program data.

Fox was first at 8 p.m. with a 5.0 for baseball, followed by CBS with a 3.7 for “Survivor.” ABC was third with a series-low 2.7 for “FlashForward,” NBC fourth with a 2.1 for “Community” (2.1) and “Parks and Recreation” (2.1), CW fifth with a 2.0 for “Vampire Diaries” and Univision sixth with a 1.3 for “El Nombre del Amor.”

At 9 p.m. Fox led again with a 5.2 for more baseball, followed closely by ABC with a 5.1 for “Grey’s Anatomy.” NBC was third with a 3.6 for “The Office” (4.2) and “30 Rock” (3.0), CBS fourth with a series-low 3.4 for “CSI,” Univision fifth with a 1.6 for “Sortilegio” and CW sixth with a 1.3 for “Supernatural.”

Fox was first at 10 p.m. with a 5.8 for baseball, with ABC second with a 3.6 for “Private Practice.” CBS was third with a 3.5 for “The Mentalist,” NBC fourth with a 1.6 for “The Jay Leno Show” and Univision fifth with a 0.9 for “Rosa de Guadalupe.”

Among households, Fox was first for the night with a 10.7 average overnight rating and a 17 share. CBS was second at 8.5/13, ABC third at 6.8/11, NBC fourth at 3.5/6, CW fifth at 2.1/3 and Univision sixth at 1.9/3.
