'The Bachelorette'
steams up ABC

Two-hour reality show matches a summer high with a 2.7

Jul 14, 2009

As “The Bachelorette” gets closer to making her final choice, with just two weeks until the season finale, ratings for the show are heating up.

The ABC series matched its summer high with a 2.7 adults 18-49 rating from 8 to 10 p.m. last night, according to Nielsen overnights, tying a rerun of CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” for the night’s highest-rated show.

“Bachelorette” built from a 2.4 in its first half hour to a 3.0 in its final half hour, winning the two-hour slot.

The show tied a summer high set two weeks ago, though it was not a season high. The show premiered behind the season finale of “Dancing with the Stars” during the regular season back in May, averaging a 3.0.

Of course it hasn’t hurt that “Bachelorette” is facing minimal original competition. The only Big Five network besides ABC with originals on last night was NBC, which aired "Great American Road Trip" at 8 p.m. and “Dateline NBC” at 10 p.m.

ABC was first for the night among 18-49s with a 2.4 average overnight rating and a 7 share. CBS was second at 2.1/6, Univision third at 1.4/4, NBC and Fox tied for fourth at 1.1/3 and CW sixth at 0.2/1.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-two percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. ABC led with a 2.5 for “Bachelorette,” followed by CBS with a 1.9 for repeats of “How I Met Your Mother” and “Rules of Engagement.” Univision was third with a 1.3 for “El Nombre del Amor,” Fox fourth with a 1.2 for a “House” rerun, NBC fifth with a 0.9 for “Great American Road Trip” and CW sixth with a 0.3 for a repeat of “One Tree Hill”

ABC was first again at 9 p.m. with a 2.9 for more “Bachelorette,” with CBS second with a 2.7 for repeats of “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory.” Univision was third with a 1.7 for “Mañana Es para Siempre.” NBC and Fox tied for fourth at 1.0, NBC for a repeat of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” and Fox for a “Lie to Me” rerun, and CW was sixth with a 0.2 for a repeat of “Gossip Girl.”

At 10 p.m. ABC finished first with a 2.0 for “Here Come the Newlyweds,” while CBS remained second with a 1.9 for a repeat of “CSI: Miami.” NBC was third with a 1.4 for “Dateline” and Univision fourth with a 1.3 for “Cristina.”

CBS ended first for the night among households with a 4.7 average overnight rating and an 8 share. ABC was a close second at 4.6/8, NBC third at 3.0/5, Fox fourth at 2.4/4, Univision fifth at 1.9/3 and CW sixth at 0.5/1.
