Sweeter tune
for Fox's 'American Idol'

Hit show bounces back from last week's season low

May 14, 2008

With the season finale of “American Idol” one week away, the Fox reality show’s ratings are climbing back up. “Idol” bounced back from last week’s season lows among adults 18-49 and total viewers to once again dominate Tuesday night.

“Idol” averaged an 8.6 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen overnights, up 5 percent over the previous week’s 8.2 overnight. Among total viewers it saw a bigger jump, rising from 21.2 million last week to 23.97 million last night.

Among total viewers, it was up 900,000 over the same week last year but down 3 percent among 18-49s, from an 8.9.

That seems to suggest that viewers who may have tuned out in recent weeks are returning in anticipation of next week’s season finale. There are three contestants remaining, with one being eliminated in tonight’s results program.

With both its shows up from last week, Fox finished first for the night among viewers 18-49 with a 7.1 average overnight rating and a 19 share. ABC was second at 2.5/7, CBS third at 2.4/6, NBC fourth at 2.3/6, Univision fifth at 2.0/5 and CW sixth at 0.8/2.

At 8 p.m. Fox was first with an 8.6 rating for “Idol,” followed by CBS with a 3.0 for “NCIS.” Univision was third with a 2.0 for “Al Diablo con los Guapos,” ABC fourth with a 1.4 for an hour of “According to Jim,” NBC fifth with a 1.2 for “Most Outrageous Moments” and CW sixth with a 0.7 for “Beauty and the Geek.”

Fox led again at 9 p.m. with a 5.5 for “Hell’s Kitchen,” up from a 5.2 last week, while ABC moved to second with a 4.0 for “Dancing with the Stars.” CBS was third with a 2.1 for “Shark,” Univision fourth with a 2.0 for “Fuego en la Sangre,” NBC fifth with a 1.9 for a repeat of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and CW sixth with a 0.9 for “Reaper.”

At 10 p.m. NBC took the lead with a 3.8 for an original “L&O: SVU,” with ABC and CBS tied for second at 2.1, ABC for “Women’s Murder Club” and CBS for a repeat of “Criminal Minds.” Univision was fourth that hour with a 1.9 for “Aqui y Ahora.”

Fox also finished first for the night among households with a 10.6 average overnight rating and a 16 share. CBS was second at 7.2/12, ABC third at 6.6/11, NBC fourth at 4.8/8, Univision fifth at 2.2/4 and CW sixth at 1.2/2.
