The original movie “A Raisin in the Sun,” based on Lorraine Hansberry’s award-winning Broadway play, helped ABC break NBC’s six-week Monday night winning streak last night while sending several new shows to series lows.
“Sun” averaged a 3.6 adults 18-49 rating and 9 share from 8 to 11 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, topping NBC’s 3.2/8 three-hour average. Granted, NBC was without the now-concluded reality show “American Gladiators,” which had provided some of its Monday kick the last few weeks before going on hiatus.
But “Sun” had a withering effect on several new shows, including “Gladiators” replacement “My Dad is Better Than Your Dad,” which slipped 20 percent from last week’s 3.5 to a 2.8 last night at 9 p.m.
CBS’s “Welcome to the Captain,” a new sitcom, also dipped to a series low with a 1.8 at 8:30 p.m. And Fox’s “Moment of Truth,” the season’s top-rated new show while airing in the lush post-“American Idol” spot on Wednesdays, slipped to a 3.6 rating in its first Monday outing, off more than half from its season average.
Meanwhile, ABC’s average was up 71 percent from last week’s 2.1 Monday average, when it carried the season finale of “Dance Wars: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann” and “October Road.”
“Sun” also averaged a solid 12.7 million total viewers and received strong reviews.
Meanwhile, Fox placed third for the night at 3.1/8, CBS fourth at 2.6/7, Univision fifth at 1.6/4 and CW sixth at 0.7/2.
NBC started the night in the lead with a 4.2 rating at 8 p.m. for “Deal or No Deal,” followed by Fox with a 3.6 for “Truth.” ABC was third with a 3.3 for the first hour of “Sun,” CBS fourth with a 2.0 average for a repeat of “How I Met Your Mother” and “Captain” (1.8), Univision fifth with a 1.9 for “Al Diablo con los Guapos” and CW sixth with a 0.5 for a repeat of “Gossip Girl.”
At 9 p.m. ABC took the lead with a 3.9 for its second hour of “Raisin,” with CBS second with a 3.5 average for a repeat of “Two and a Half Men” and a new episode of “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (3.0). NBC was third with a 2.8 for “Dad,” Fox fourth with a 2.7 for “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” Univision fifth with a 1.5 for “Pasion” and CW sixth with a 0.8 for “The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious.”
ABC led again at 10 p.m. with a 3.6 for its last hour of “Raisin,” while CBS and NBC tied for second at 2.5, CBS for a repeat of “CSI: Miami” and NBC for “Medium.” Univision was fourth with a 1.3 for “Cristina.”
ABC also finished first for the night among households with an 8.6 average overnight rating and a 14 share. NBC was second at 6.2/10, CBS third at 5.5/9, Fox fourth at 4.9/7, Univision fifth at 2.0/3 and CW sixth at 1.1/2.
