hits high for season

“Private Practice” hit a series high last night, with assists from “Grey’s Anatomy” and CBS, which was in reruns.

“Practice” averaged a 5.3 adults 18-49 rating in the 10 p.m. slot, according to Nielsen overnights, nearly doubling NBC’s competing “ER.”

That was easily the show’s best rating of this season, and it benefitted from a heavily promoted crossover with “Grey’s,” the show it was spun off of. Patrick Dempsey appeared on last night’s “Practice,” and next week several “Practice” characters will guest on “Grey’s” and vice versa for the second part of the crossover.

The stunt came on a night with relatively light competition, as CBS’s entire lineup was in reruns. Opposite a repeat of “CSI,” “Grey’s” had its best rating, a 5.8, since November.

“Grey’s” and “Practice” were the night’s two highest-rated shows and boosted ABC to an easy victory on the night.

ABC was first for the night among 18-49s with a 4.5 average overnight rating and a 12 share. Fox was second at 3.3/9, NBC third at 2.9/8, CBS fourth at 2.2/6, Univision fifth at 1.8/5 and CW sixth at 1.5/4.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Twenty-eight percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

Fox was first at 8 p.m. with a 3.2 for “Bones,” with ABC second with a 2.3 for “Ugly Betty.” NBC was third with a 2.2 for “My Name is Earl” (2.5) and “Kath & Kim” (2.0), CBS fourth with a 2.0 for repeats of “The Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met Your Mother,” Univision fifth with a 1.8 for “Cuidado con el Angel” and CW sixth with a 1.6 for “Smallville.”

At 9 p.m. ABC took the lead with a 5.8 for “Grey’s,” followed by NBC with a 3.7 for “The Office” (4.3) and “30 Rock” (3.0). Fox was third with a 3.5 for “Hell’s Kitchen,” CBS fourth with a 2.7 for a “CSI” rerun, Univision fifth with a 2.2 for “Fuego en la Sangre” and CW sixth with a 1.3 for “Supernatural.”

ABC led again at 10 p.m. with a 5.3 for “Private Practice,” while NBC remained second with a 2.7 for “ER.” CBS was third with a 1.9 for a repeat of “Eleventh Hour” and Univision fourth with a 1.5 for “Rosa de Guadalupe.”

Among households, ABC led the night with a 7.7 average overnight rating and a 12 share. CBS and Fox tied for second at 5.6/9, with NBC fourth at 4.3/7, Univision fifth at 2.2/4 and CW sixth at 2.2/3.
