Post-strike dip
for Big Three networks

Ratings are down 11 percent for ABC, NBC and CBS

Mar 6, 2008

Original scripted programming can’t return quick enough for broadcast, especially on Wednesday night. With Fox dominating as usual, ABC, NBC and CBS all saw losses from last week’s averages.

Those networks combined for a 6.4 adults 18-49 rating last night, according to Nielsen overnights, off 11 percent from last week’s 7.2 combined rating.

Meanwhile Fox was also down a bit from last week, when it had a 90-minute “American Idol” instead of last night’s 60-minute edition. But it still finished 28 percent ahead of the combined Big Three’s average at 8.2.

Nearly every show on broadcast was down week to week, and not all of them competed against the 8 p.m. “Idol.” NBC’s “Law & Order,” for instance, slipped 15 percent from the previous week, from a 3.4 to a 2.9, though it still won the 10 p.m. timeslot.

ABC’s “Men in Trees” was also off slightly from the previous week’s debut, and it’s possible the finale of “Project Runway,” which aired in the same timeslot on Bravo, could have hurt the shows. That program does well among 18-49s.

CBS’s “Big Brother,” NBC’s “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” and ABC’s “Supernanny” all slipped from the previous week as well.

Meanwhile, Fox led the night among 18-49s with an 8.2 average overnight rating and a 21 share. NBC was second at 2.2/6, CBS third at 2.1/6, ABC fourth at 2.1/5, Univision fifth at 1.7/4 and CW sixth at 1.4/4.

At 8 p.m. Fox was first with a 10.2 rating for “American Idol,” with CBS second with a 2.0 for “Big Brother.” Univision and ABC tied for third at 1.9, Univision for “Al Diablo con los Guapos” and ABC for “Wife Swap,” with CW fifth with a 1.8 for “America’s Next Top Model” and NBC sixth with a 1.6 for “Criminal Intent.”

Fox led again at 9 p.m. with a 6.2 for “Moment of Truth,” followed by ABC with a 2.8 for “Supernanny.” NBC was third with a 2.2 for “Deal or No Deal,” CBS fourth with a 2.1 for a repeat of “Criminal Minds,” Univision fifth with a 1.6 for “Pasion” and CW sixth with a 1.0 for a repeat of “The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious.”

At 10 p.m. NBC took the lead with a 2.9 for “L&O,” while CBS moved to second with a 2.3 for a repeat of “CSI: NY.” Univision and ABC tied for third that hour at 1.6, Univision for “Don Francisco Presenta” and ABC for “Trees.”

Fox also finished first for the night among households with a 12.5 average overnight rating and a 19 share. NBC was second at 5.7/9, CBS third at 5.2/8, ABC fourth at 4.1/7, Univision fifth at 2.0/3 and CW sixth at 1.9/3.
