Call it a case of good timing for NBC's "The Biggest Loser." Days after much of America resolved to lose weight and get in shape for the new year, the network's reality show about morbidly obese people trying to do the same had a strong premiere.
"Loser" averaged a 4.6 adults 18-49 rating from 8 to 10 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, its best-ever debut number and up 21 percent from last fall's debut, which averaged a 3.8.
It was down only slightly from "Loser's" big fall finale last month, which averaged a 5.0.
That boosted NBC to a victory on the night, giving it a slight edge over CBS's usually dominant lineup.
NBC averaged a 3.8 average overnight rating and a 10 share in primetime, just ahead of. CBS at 3.7/10. Fox placed third at 3.3/9, followed by Univision in fourth at 1.4/4, ABC fifth at 1.3/3 and CW sixth at 0.4/1.
As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-four percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.
Also, ratings for Fox’s Orange Bowl are approximate as fast nationals measure timeslot and not actual program data.
CBS began the night in the lead with a 4.4 at 8 p.m. for “NCIS,” followed by NBC with a 4.2 for the first half of “Loser.” Fox was third with a 2.8 for college football pregame and the start of the Orange Bowl coverage, and ABC and Univision tied for fourth at 1.4, ABC for “Scrubs” (1.5) and “Better Off Ted” (1.3) and Univision for “En Nombre del Amor.” The CW placed sixth with a 0.4 for a repeat of “90210.”
NBC took the lead at 9 p.m. with a 5.0 for more “Loser,” while CBS slipped to second with a 3.7 for “NCIS: Los Angeles.” Fox was third with a 3.6 for football, Univision fourth with a 1.8 for “Sortilegio,” ABC fifth with a 1.2 for another round of “Scrubs” (1.4) and “Ted” (1.1), and CW sixth with a 0.3 for a “Melrose Place” rerun.
Fox moved to first at 10 p.m. with a 3.5 for more football, with CBS second with a 3.0 for “The Good Wife.” NBC was third with a 2.2 for “The Jay Leno Show,” ABC fourth with a 1.2 for “the forgotten” and Univision fifth with a 1.0 for “Aqui y Ahora.”
CBS led the night among households with a 10.9 average overnight rating and a 17 share, followed by Fox at 6.2/10. NBC was third at 6.0/9, ABC fourth at 2.3/4, Univision fifth at 1.9/3 and CW sixth at 0.6/1.
