The women’s gymnastics competition didn’t really pick up until after 11 p.m. last night. Still, NBC saw ratings for its Olympics coverage bump up a bit over the previous evening.
The network averaged 27.9 million total viewers in primetime, according to Nielsen overnights, bettering its fast nationals total from Wednesday night by about 700,000.
It was also up slightly over the previous night in adults 18-49, from a 9.1 to a 9.3.
As a reminder, fast nationals measure only timeslot data and not actual program data, so the numbers for NBC are very rough. The telecast lasted well past 1 a.m., though it’s likely part of that will be broken out as local programming.
Still, ratings were on the rise at 10:30 p.m., the final half-hour measured by fast nationals. NBC averaged 36 million viewers in that half-hour and a 13.1 18-49 rating, both nightly bests.
Final numbers will be out later today.
Not surprisingly, NBC was first for the night among 18-49s with a 9.3 average overnight rating and a 27 share. CBS was second at 1.8/5, Univision third at 1.6/5, Fox fourth at 1.3/4, ABC fifth at 1.0/3 and CW sixth at 0.6/2.
Ratings for Fox are also approximate, as it aired a live NFL preseason game that was interrupted for nearly an hour by thunderstorms. While the Philadelphia Eagles-Carolina Panthers game was delayed, Fox showed a rerun of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” from roughly 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
At 8 p.m. NBC was first with a 6.2 for the Olympics, followed by CBS with a 2.2 for “Big Brother.” Univision was third with a 1.8 for “Al Diablo con los Guapos” Fox fourth with a 1.3 for football and half of “Smarter,” ABC fifth with a 0.9 for a repeat of “Ugly Betty” and CW sixth with a 0.6 for a “Smallville” rerun.
NBC led again at 9 p.m. with a 9.4 for Olympics, while Univision moved to second with a 1.7 for “Fuego en la Sangre.” CBS was third with a 1.6 for a “CSI” rerun, ABC and Fox tied for fourth at 1.2, ABC for a repeat of “Grey’s Anatomy” and Fox for “Smarter” and football, and CW sixth with a 0.6 for a repeat of “Supernatural.”
At 10 p.m. NBC was first with a 12.5 for more Olympics, with CBS second with a 1.6 for “Flashpoint.” Univision was third with a 1.4 for “La Rosa de Guadalupe,” Fox fourth with a 1.2 for football and ABC fifth with a 0.8 for a repeat of “Private Practice.”
