"American Idol" continued to dominate the competition Tuesday, its third night back, actually showing gains over last year's equivalent episode though dropping from last week's debut.

"Idol" averaged a 9.9 adults 18-49 rating at 8 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, bettering the combined ratings of ABC, CBS, NBC and the CW in the timeslot, though all but NBC were in reruns.

The Fox reality show slipped 15 percent from an 11.7 rating for last week's two-hour premiere on Tuesday night, though it was off just 2 percent from the 10.1 for Wednesday's 90-minute episode.

The show did actually gain compared to week two last year, up 9 percent. Last night's episode averaged 26.1 million total viewers.

It was otherwise a slow night for broadcast. CBS and CW were entirely in repeats, and NBC was the only Big Five network with entirely original fare on the night.

NBC's "The Biggest Loser" clearly benefited from "Idol's" contraction from two hours last week to one hour this week. The second hour of the weight loss show surged 38 percent over the first hour, when it was competing with "Idol."

Buoyed by "Idol," Fox finished first for the night among 18-49s with a 6.7 average overnight rating and an 18 share. NBC was second at 3.4/9, CBS third at 2.4/6, Univision fourth at 1.4/4, ABC fifth at 1.0/3 and CW sixth at 0.3/1.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-four percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. Fox was first with a 9.9 for “Idol,” with NBC second with a 3.4 for “Loser.” CBS was third with a 2.6 for a repeat of “NCIS,” Univision fourth with a 1.3 for “Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe,” ABC fifth with a 0.7 for repeats of “Scrubs” and “Better off Ted,” and CW sixth with a 0.3 for a repeat of “90210.”

NBC took the lead at 9 p.m. with a 4.7 for more “Loser,” while Fox slipped to second with a 3.4 for a repeat of Sunday's premiere of new drama “Human Target.” CBS was third with a 2.5 for an “NCIS: Los Angeles” rerun, Univision fourth with a 1.7 for “Sortilegio,” ABC fifth with a 1.3 for new episodes of “Scrubs” (1.4) and “Better off Ted” (1.3), and CW sixth with a 0.2 for a “Melrose Place” repeat.

At 10 p.m. CBS and NBC tied for the lead at 2.0, CBS for a repeat of “The Good Wife” and NBC for “The Jay Leno Show,” with Univision third with a 1.2 for “Aqui y Ahora” and ABC fourth with a 1.0 for a repeat of “The Forgotten.”

Among households, Fox led the night with a 9.8 average overnight rating and a 15 share. CBS was second at 7.7/12, NBC third at 5.2/8, ABC fourth at 2.1/3, Univision fifth at 1.9/3 and CW sixth at 0.5/1.
