NBC's 'Talent'
holds grip on the gold

Variety show averages a 2.7 in adults 18-49

Aug 28, 2008

Coming off a dominant Olympics, NBC still has a good deal of momentum. The network won its third-straight post-Games primetime last night on the strength of the Wednesday premiere of hit show “America’s Got Talent.”

“Talent” averaged a 2.7 adults 18-49 rating from 8 to 10 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, easily the night’s top show. It delivered the network’s best non-Olympic results in the time period since January.

Of course, during much of that span “American Idol” dominated at least some of the timeslot, which hasn’t been strong for NBC for quite some time. But last night the network thoroughly thumped the competition.

“Talent” finished 59 percent ahead of the No. 2 shows in the slot, on CBS and Fox, and its rating jumped 23 percent from its first to its fourth half-hour, from a 2.3 to a 3.0.

The network has now won every night since the Olympics, starting Monday with a victory fueled by the season premiere of “Deal or No Deal” and continuing Tuesday with “Talent’s” return after a two-week Olympic layoff.

NBC finished first for the night among viewers 18-49 with a 2.3 average overnight rating and a 7 share. Fox was second at 1.8/5, Univision third at 1.7/5, CBS fourth at 1.4/4, ABC fifth at 1.1/3 and CW sixth at 0.6/2.

At 8 p.m. NBC led with a 2.5 for the first hour of “Talent,” followed by Univision with a 1.9 for “Al Diablo con los Guapos.” CBS was third with a 1.7 for “Greatest American Dog,” Fox fourth with a 1.6 for a repeat of “Bones,” ABC fifth with a 1.2 for a “Wife Swap” rerun and CW sixth with a 0.5 for a repeat of “America’s Next Top Model.”

NBC was first again at 9 p.m. with a 2.9 for more “Talent,” while Univision remained second with a 1.9 for “Fuego en la Sangre.” Fox and CBS tied for third at 1.8, Fox for another “Bones” rerun and CBS for a repeat of “Criminal Minds,” with ABC fifth with a 1.2 for a repeat of “Supernanny” and CW sixth with a rerun of “The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious.”

At 10 p.m. NBC was first with a 1.6 for day three coverage of the Democratic National Convention, the third straight night it has dominated the convention coverage. It was followed again by Univision with a 1.3 for “Don Francisco Presenta.” ABC and CBS tied for third at 0.9, each for DNC coverage.

Among households, NBC led the night with a 5.6 average overnight rating and a 9 share. Fox was second at 3.9/6, CBS third at 3.5/6, ABC fourth at 2.4/4, Univision fifth at 2.2/4 and CW sixth at 1.0/2.
