slips its second outing

Averages a 2.6 in 18-49s, off 16 percent from last week

In its second week, NBC's new drama "Parenthood" stumbled. Whether its numbers fall further in coming weeks will determine whether the show gets a second season.

"Parenthood" averaged a 2.6 adults 18-49 rating last night at 10 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, down 16 percent from last week's 3.1 in its debut.

That's not a tremendous tumble, though "Parenthood" did not have a tremendous debut rating to begin with.

After winning the timeslot last week, "Parenthood" slipped to second last night behind CBS's "The Good Wife," which averaged a 2.8.

"Parenthood" was still well ahead of former timeslot occupant "The Jay Leno Show's" 10 p.m. average, and it performed 1.1 better than ABC's competing "the forgotten," which managed a mere 1.5 despite a strong lead from "Lost." That explains why "forgotten" is ending soon.

Meanwhile, in late-night ratings, "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" trailed "The Late Show with David Letterman" for the first time since Leno's return last week.

According to metered-market numbers, CBS's Letterman averaged a 3.5 in households last night to Leno's 3.2 on NBC, Letterman likely buoyed by interest in what he'd say after his blackmailer pleaded guilty.

Fox finished first for the night among 18-49s with a 5.6 average overnight rating and a 15 share. CBS was second at 3.4/9, NBC third at 2.9/8, ABC fourth at 2.4/7, Univision fifth at 1.3/4 and CW sixth at 0.7/2.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-six percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. Fox led with a Tuesday season-low 8.2 for “American Idol,” with CBS second with a 3.8 for “NCIS.” NBC was third with a 2.6 for “The Biggest Loser,” Univision fourth with a 1.7 for “Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe,” ABC fifth with a 1.5 for a repeat of “Lost” and CW sixth with a 0.8 for “90210.”

ABC took the lead at 9 p.m. with a 4.2 for a new “Lost,” while CBS remained second with a 3.5 for “NCIS: Los Angeles.” NBC was third with a 3.4 for more “Loser,” Fox fourth with a 3.0 for a repeat of “Glee,” Univision fifth with a 1.2 for “Corazon Salvaje” and CW sixth with a 0.5 for “Melrose Place.”

At 10 p.m. CBS was first with a 2.8 for “The Good Wife,” followed by NBC with a 2.6 for “Parenthood.” ABC was third with a 1.5 for “The Forgotten” and Univision fourth with a 1.1 for “Nuestra Belleza Latina.”

CBS led the night among households with a 10.4 average overnight rating and a 17 share. Fox was second at 8.7/14, NBC third at 4.6/8, ABC fourth at 3.9/6, Univision fifth at 1.8/3 and CW sixth at 1.0/2.
