NBC continues to be competitive in the 10 p.m. timeslot, though that says as much about the competition as anything NBC is programming.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" tied for first place with CBS's "CSI: NY" at 10 last night with a 2.6 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen overnights.

Both shows were down from last week, "SVU" falling 4 percent and "CSI: NY" off 13 percent. In fact, the latter sank to a series low. ABC's 10 p.m. show, the soon-to-finish "Ugly Betty," did even worse, averaging a 1.5.

It was the second straight night that NBC scored a 2.6 in the slot, which is about a point above what Jay Leno was averaging when he left the air last month. But CBS and ABC haven't been putting up much of a fight.

Meanwhile, "America's Next Top Model" returned to decent numbers with a 90-minute premiere last night, up 6 percent over last fall in adults 18-34 (1.8) and winning the 8 p.m. hour among the network's target women 18-34 (2.8).

But 9:30 p.m. leadout "High Society," a new reality show following socialites, fizzled, losing more than 60 percent of its lead-in among women 18-34 and averaging a mere 1.0 rating, sixth in its timeslot.

Fox led the night among 18-49s with a 4.9 average overnight rating and a 14 share. CBS was second at 2.7/8, ABC third at 2.2/6, NBC fourth at 1.8/5, CW fifth at 1.3/4 and Univision sixth at 1.2/3.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-six percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. Fox was first with a 2.4 for “Human Target,” followed by CBS with a 2.2 for “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (2.3) and “Gary Unmarried” (2.2) and ABC with a 1.9 for “Scrubs” (1.5) and “The Middle” (2.3). CW and Univision tied for fourth at 1.6, CW for “Model” and Univision for “Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe,” and NBC was sixth with a 1.5 for “Mercy.”

Fox led again at 9 p.m. with a 7.5 for “American Idol,” with CBS second with a 3.4 for “Criminal Minds.” ABC was third with a 3.1 for “Modern Family” (3.7, the night's highest-rated scripted show) and “Cougar Town” (2.6), NBC fourth with a 1.4 for a repeat of “SVU,” Univision fifth with a 1.2 for “Corazon Salvaje” and CW sixth with a 1.0 for the end of “Model” (1.5) and the premiere of “Society” (0.6).

At 10 p.m. CBS and NBC tied for first at 2.6, CBS for “CSI: NY” and NBC for a new “SVU,” while ABC finished third with a 1.5 for “Ugly Betty” and Univision fourth with a 0.8 for “Don Francisco Presenta.”

Fox was also first for the night among households with an 8.3 average overnight rating and a 13 share. CBS was second at 6.6/1, NBC third at 4.5/8, ABC fourth at 3.6/6, CW fifth at 2.1/3 and Univision sixth at 1.7/3.
