grows against 'Idol'

Even a strong "American Idol" didn't slow down ABC's "Modern Family."

Fox's "Idol" grew over last week, but the competing "Family" tied a series high with a 4.2 adults 18-49 rating in their shared 9 p.m. timeslot last night, according to Nielsen overnights.

"Family" was second in the slot to "Idol," which more than doubled the ABC show's rating with a 9.5. But "Family" was up 8 percent over last week and tied its premiere week rating.

"Family" isn't the only ABC comedy gaining. The 8:30 p.m. sitcom "The Middle" set a series high with a 3.0, the second straight week it has posted a series-best performance and easily winning its (very weak) timeslot.

In fact, the only ABC show that was not up week to week was "Family" lead-out "Cougar Town," which also aired opposite "Idol." That slipped 3 percent to a 2.8.

"Idol" kept up the ratings momentum from new judge Ellen DeGeneres' debut Tuesday. Though the show was down from a 10.1 Tuesday night, it was up 22 percent from last week and also equaled the rating from the week before.

Led by "Idol," Fox was first for the night among 18-49s with a 6.0 average overnight rating and a 15 share. CBS was second at 3.3/9, ABC third at 2.6/7, NBC fourth at 1.6/4, Univision fifth at 1.5/4 and CW sixth at 0.6/1.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-four percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

Also, note that the numbers may be skewed by coverage of the East Coast blizzard. Some local affiliates preempted regular programming for special reports.

ABC was first at 8 p.m. with a 2.7 for “Charlie Brown Valentine” (2.5) and “Middle” (3.0), followed by Fox with a 2.5 for “Human Target.” CBS was third with a 2.4 for “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (2.3) and “Gary Unmarried” (2.4), NBC fourth with a 1.8 for “Mercy,” Univision fifth with a 1.5 for “Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe” and CW sixth with a 0.8 for a repeat of “Life Unexpected.”

Fox took over at 9 p.m. with a 9.5 for “American Idol,” while CBS moved to second with a 3.8 for “Criminal Minds.” ABC was third with a 3.5 for “Modern Family” (4.2) and “Cougar Town” (2.8), Univision fourth with a 1.9 for “Sortilegio,” NBC fifth with a 1.2 for a repeat of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and CW sixth with a 0.3 for a “Gossip Girl” rerun.

At 10 p.m. CBS was first with a 3.6 for “CSI: NY,” with NBC second with a 1.8 for another “L&O: SVU” rerun. ABC was third with a 1.7 for “Ugly Betty” and Univision fourth with a 1.1 for “Don Francisco Presenta.”

Fox also led the night among households with a 9.4 average overnight rating and a 14 share. CBS was second at 7.4/12, ABC third at 4.2/7, NBC fourth at 3.9/6, Univision fifth at 2.0/3 and CW sixth at 0.7/1.
