short of the mark

“Miss Guided” received warm reviews and a decent lead-in, premiering last night behind ABC hit “Dancing with the Stars.” But the show produced only lukewarm ratings.

“Miss” averaged a 2.9 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen overnights, retaining only 57 percent of “Stars’” 10 p.m. lead-in of 5.1.

The show tied with a rerun of NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” for first place in the 10:30 p.m. timeslot. It did win in total viewers, drawing a solid 9.99 million.

But “Miss” faces a much tougher task tomorrow night, when it moves to its regular 8 p.m. Thursday timeslot and no longer has the luxury of a “Stars” lead-in. The earlier timeslot is certainly more favorable for a half hour comedy, with sitcoms almost never airing so late on broadcast and most people not accustomed to looking for them there.

Also, tomorrow’s back-to-back episodes feature a much-buzzed-about guest appearance by pregnant “Zoey 101” star Jamie Lynn Spears, which could attract a young crowd, as well as a guest spot by executive producer Ashton Kutcher.

Meanwhile, Fox was first for the night among 18-49s with a 10.3 average overnight rating and a 25 share, with ABC second at 3.1/8, NBC third at 3.0/8, CBS fourth at 2.0/5, Univision fifth at 1.6/4 and CW sixth at 1.1/3.

At 8 p.m. Fox was first with a 10.1 for the first hour of “American Idol,” followed by NBC with a 2.8 for its first half of “The Biggest Loser.” CBS and Univision tied for third that hour at 2.0, CBS for a repeat of “NCIS” and Univision for “Al Diablo con los Guapos,” with ABC fifth with a 1.8 average for “It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown” (1.9) and “Just for Laughs” (1.6), and CW sixth with a 0.8 for “Beauty and the Geek.”

Fox led again at 9 p.m. with a 10.5 for another hour of “Idol,” while ABC moved to second with a 3.5 for the first hour of “Stars.” NBC was third with a 3.4 for its second hour of “Loser,” CBS fourth with a 2.0 for “Big Brother,” Univision fifth with a 1.5 for “Pasion” and CW sixth with a 1.4 for “One Tree Hill.”

At 10 p.m. ABC took the lead with a 4.0 average for the last half hour of “Stars” (5.1) and the premiere of “Miss” (2.9). NBC was second with a 2.7 for a repeat of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” CBS third with a 2.0 for “Jericho” and Univision fourth with a 1.2 for “Aqui y Ahora.”

Among households, Fox led the night with a 15.1 average overnight rating and a 23 share. ABC was second at 7.6/12, NBC third at 5.3/8, CBS fourth at 4.6/7, Univision fifth at 1.9/3 and CW sixth at 1.6/2.
