There wasn’t much unusual about last night’s premiere of ABC’s “The Unusuals.”
The new cop show averaged a 2.2 rating among viewers 18-49 last night, according to Nielsen overnights, just a tick better than the 2.1 last week’s series finale of “Life on Mars” earned.
The show held 59 percent of its lead-in audience in the demo, "Lost," which earned a 3.7, and even more troubling it dipped 24 percent from its first half hour to its second, from a 2.4 to a 1.9.
Still, “Unusuals” was able to improve on what has been a troubling timeslot for ABC this season. The network notes that last night’s premiere was a 16 percent improvement from the 1.9 18-49 rating the timeslot has averaged this season, as well as a 21 percent improvement among total viewers (6.8 million versus 5.6 million).
ABC says the series premiere generated the network’s largest audience with regular series programming in the Wednesday 10 p.m. hour since October, when the season premiere of “Dirty Sexy Money” aired.
“Unusuals” also faced more timeslot competition than the “Life on Mars” finale did last week. An original of CBS’s “CSI: NY” posted a 3.3 among 18-49s in the hour last night, up 50 percent from the 2.2 a repeat earned last week.
Fox was first for the night among 18-49s with a 5.2 average overnight rating among and 14 share. CBS was second with 2.9/8, ABC third with 2.6/7, Univision fourth with 1.8/5, CW fifth with 1.3/4 and NBC sixth with 1.2/3.
As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Twenty-eight percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.
At 8 p.m., Fox led with a 2.5 for “Lie to Me,” followed by CBS with a 2.2 for “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (2.1) and “Gary Unmarried” (2.2) and Univision third with a 1.8 for “Cuidado con el Angel.” ABC averaged a 1.7 for “Scrubs” (1.8) and “Better Off Ted” (1.7), as did CW for “America’s Next Top Model.” NBC was sixth with a 1.2 for a repeat of “Law & Order.”
Fox built on its lead at 9 with a 7.8 for “American Idol.” ABC was second with a 3.7 for “Lost,” CBS third with a 3.2 for “Criminal Minds,” Univision fourth with a 2.1 for “Mañana Es para Siempre,” NBC fifth with a 1.3 for “Life” and CW sixth with a 0.9 for an “ANTM” clip show.
