The Dallas Cowboys are ratings gold for NBC this season.
"Sunday Night Football" posted its second-highest rating of the season last night with the Cowboys facing the Philadelphia Eagles. It ranked behind only Dallas' home opener in September, which posted the best primetime ratings for any game in 11 years.
Last night's contest averaged a 14.3 household rating, according to Nielsen overnights, airing from 8:30 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. That was two points behind the Cowboys' 33-31 loss to the New York Giants in week two of the NFL season.
The Cowboys won last night, 20-16, in a game that was close the whole way. The game was up 20 percent over the New England Patriots-Indianapolis Colts game that aired during week nine of the season last year.
The game clearly had an impact on the competition. "Family Guy," "Desperate Housewives" and "Brothers & Sisters" were all down versus their season-to-date averages.
NBC finished first for the night among 18-49s with a 6.2 average overnight rating and a 16 share. CBS and Fox tied for second at 3.1/8, with ABC fourth at 3.0/8 and Univision fifth at 0.9/2.
As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-three percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.
Also, ratings for NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” ABC’s NASCAR overrun and CBS's entire NFL-impacted lineup are approximate as fast nationals measure timeslot and not actual program data.
At 7 p.m. CBS was first with a 4.9 for NFL overrun and “60 Minutes,” followed by NBC with a 3.3 for “Football Night in America.” Fox was third with a 2.2 for “Brothers” (2.3) and “American Dad” (2.1), ABC fourth with a 1.9 for NASCAR overrun and “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and Univision fifth with a 0.7 for the end of a Mexican league soccer game and “Maria de Todos los Angeles.”
NBC took the lead at 8 p.m. with a 6.7 for NFL pregame and the start of “Sunday Night Football, while CBS and Fox tied for second at 3.5, CBS for the end of "60 Minutes" and start of “The Amazing Race” and Fox for “Family Guy” (3.7) and “Family Guy Presents Seth & Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show” (3.4). ABC was fourth with a 3.0 for “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and Univision fifth with a 0.9 for “Vive el Sueño.”
At 9 p.m. NBC was first with a 7.6 for football, with ABC second with a 4.3 for “Desperate Housewives.” Fox was third with a 3.6 for “Guy” (4.0) and “The Cleveland Show” (3.2), CBS fourth with a 2.3 for the end of "Race" and start of “Three Rivers” and Univision fifth with a 1.1 for more “Sueño.”
NBC was first again at 10 p.m. with a 7.4 for more football, followed by ABC with a 2.9 for “Brothers & Sisters.” CBS was third with a 1.7 for the end of "Rivers" and start of “Cold Case” and Univision fourth with a 0.9 for “Quien Tiene la Razon.”
NBC also led the night among households with a 9.9 average overnight rating and a 16 share. CBS was second at 7.6/12, ABC third at 6.1/10, Fox fourth at 3.7/6 and Univision fifth at 1.3/2.
