Globes take shine
off the competition

'24' premiere slips 12 percent from last year, to a 3.8

The ratings surge for the Golden Globes seemed to hurt the competition on broadcast Sunday night.

With that telecast up 10 percent over 2009, the season premiere of Fox's "24" slipped compared to last year, while ABC's "Desperate Housewives" hit a series low.

"24" averaged a 3.8 adults 18-49 rating from 9 to 11 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, down 12 percent from last year's 4.3.

At 9 p.m., "Housewives" managed a mere 3.7 against the Globes, which, like "Housewives," skews female. That was the series' lowest rating ever and off 21 percent from a 4.7 last week.

If "Housewives" bounces back with its next original, that's an indication that the Globes really did take a bit out of its audience. But the show has been hovering at series lows for much of this season, its sixth.

"24" actually rebounded somewhat from last spring's finale, which averaged a 3.1. After last night's two-hour episode, the show settles into its regular timeslot next Monday at 9 p.m.

The new show "Human Target," which premiered at 8 p.m., managed a 2.9, but it will get a boost tomorrow night airing behind "American Idol."

Though NBC dominated the last three hours of the evening, CBS won Sunday night thanks to the AFC divisional playoffs, boosting the network to a 5.1 rating and 13 share for the night.

NBC was second at 4.1/10, followed by Fox at 2.6/7, ABC at 2.5/6 and Univision at 0.9/2.

At 7 p.m., CBS led with an 11.3 for football overrun, followed by NBC's 2.4 for the Globes pre-show. ABC was third with a 1.7 for "America's Funniest Home Videos," with Fox fourth with a 1.1 for a "24" rerun and Univision fifth with a 0.8.

At 8 p.m., NBC led with a 4.9 for the start of the Globes, followed by CBS with a 4.4 for "60 Minutes." Fox's "Target" was third at 2.9, followed by a rerun of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" at 1.8 and Univision at 1.0.

At 9 p.m., NBC's Globes led again at 4.6, followed by Fox's "24" at 3.9, ABC's "Housewives" at 3.7, CBS's "Cold Case" at 2.5 and Univision at 1.1.

At 10 p.m., the Globes led again with a 4.5, followed by Fox's "24" at 3.8, ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" at 2.7, CBS's "NCIS" rerun at 2.1 and Univision at 0.7.

Among households, CBS dominated the night with a 10.5/16, followed by NBC at 7.7/12, ABC at 5.1/8, Fox at 4.8/7 and Univision at 1.1/2.
