Fox takes Sunday
with sports lineup

Network averages a 5.2 in 18-49s, 33 percent ahead

Oct 27, 2008

With NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” taking a one-week hiatus for the World Series, Fox’s sports coverage dominated the other networks on Sunday night.

The network averaged a 5.2 adults 18-49 rating and 13 share, according to Nielsen overnights, 33 percent ahead of No. 2 ABC’s 3.9/10.

As a reminder, overnights measure only timeslot data and not actual program data, nor do they account for time zone differences. Thus numbers could shift significantly when final ratings are released tomorrow.

But Fox will have a clear victory, thanks in part to the series coverage but mostly because of a huge football overrun at 7 p.m. for the New York Giants-Pittsburgh Steelers game, which averaged a 7.9 rating.

Game four of the series posted the best numbers yet for the fall classic between the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies, who lead 3-1. According to time-zone adjusted nationals provided by Fox, the game averaged a 5.1 rating from 8:27 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., matching the same game in 2006.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Twenty-eight percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

For the night, CBS placed third in the non-time zone adjusted overnights at 2.6/7, followed by NBC fourth at 1.6/4, Univision fifth at 1.4/4 and CW sixth at 0.3/1.

At 7 p.m. Fox led with a 6.9 for NFL football overrun and its “The OT” postgame show, followed by ABC with a 2.4 for “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” CBS was third with a 2.2 for “60 Minutes,” Univision fourth with a 1.3 for soccer, NBC fifth with a 0.8 for “Football Night in America” and CW sixth with a 0.3 for “In Harm’s Way.”

Fox was first again at 8 p.m. with a 5.0 for its first hour of baseball, with ABC second with a 3.9 for “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” CBS was third with a 2.9 for “The Amazing Race,” NBC fourth with a 1.7 for the first hour of the movie “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” Univision fifth with a 1.5 for more soccer and CW sixth with a 0.3 for “Valentine.”

ABC took the lead at 9 p.m. with a 5.7 for “Desperate Housewives,” while Fox slipped to second with a 4.8 for baseball. CBS was third with a 2.7 for “Cold Case,” NBC fourth with a 2.1 for its movie, Univision fifth with a 1.4 for the first half of “Show de los Sueños: Sangre de Mi Sangre” and CW sixth with a 0.2 for “Easy Money.”

At 10 p.m. Fox regained the lead with a 4.2 for baseball, followed by ABC with a 3.5 for “Brothers & Sisters.” NBC was third with a 1.7 for the last hour of its move and Univision fourth with a 1.5 for the second half of “Sueños.”

Fox also finished first for the night among households with a 9.6 average overnight rating and a 15 share. ABC was second at 7.3/11, CBS third at 6.9/11, NBC fourth at 2.5/4, Univision fifth at 1.7/3 and CW sixth at 0.5/1.
