The Olympics ended Sunday night on NBC, much to the relief of the other broadcast networks. With the closing ceremonies also presumably came an end to the network’s two-week domination of primetime.
NBC averaged 23.6 million total viewers from 7 to 11 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, which were delayed some five hours today because of Nielsen processing delays.
Final numbers out tomorrow will give a better indication of NBC’s actual performance, but the network clearly dominated the other Big Four. ABC, CBS and Fox combined for an average 13 million Sunday night, with only CBS managing more than 5 million.
NBC was first for the night among viewers 18-49 with a 6.9 average overnight rating and a 19 share. ABC and CBS tied for second at 1.5/4, Fox was fourth at 1.2/3, Univision fifth at 0.8/2 and CW sixth at 0.3/1.
At 7 p.m. NBC was first with a 4.1 for the first of four hours of Olympics closing ceremony coverage, followed by ABC with a 1.4 for a repeat of “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” CBS was third with a 1.2 for “60 Minutes.” Univision and Fox tied for fourth at 0.8, Univision for “Hora Pico” and “Familia P. Luche” and Fox for repeats of “Til Death,” and CW was sixth with a 0.3 for a repeat of “One Tree Hill.”
NBC was first again at 8 p.m. with a 7.4 for Olympics, while CBS moved to second with a 2.2 for “Big Brother.” Fox was third with a 1.9 for repeats of “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy,” ABC fourth with a 1.4 for a repeat of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” Univision fifth with a 0.7 for the first hour of the movie “Frida” and CW sixth with a 0.2 for repeats of “Everybody Hates Chris” and “Aliens in America.”
At 9 p.m. NBC led with an 8.8 for more Olympics, with ABC back in second with a 1.1 for another hour of “Home Edition.” CBS was third with a 1.1 for a repeat of “Million Dollar Password,” and Fox and Univision tied for fourth at 1.0, Fox for a repeat of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and Univision for another hour of “Frida.” The CW was sixth with a 0.4 for two repeats of “The Game.”
NBC finished the night in the lead with a 7.1 at 10 p.m. for the Olympics, followed by CBS with a 1.6 for a repeat of “Cold Case.” ABC was third with a 1.1 for a “Desperate Housewives” rerun and Univision fourth with a 0.9 for the last half hour of “Frida” and another episode of “Hora Pico.”
Among households, NBC was first for the night with a 13.6 average overnight rating and a 23 share. CBS was second at 3.8/6, ABC third at 2.9/5, Fox fourth at 1.9/3, Univision fifth at 1.1/2 and CW sixth at 0.6/1.
