CBS's 'Victoria's
Secret' takes a fall

Annual special is down 19 percent, to a 2.9 in 18-49s

Dec 2, 2009

It seems more people were interested in watching obese people exercise than gaunt models strut in the 10 p.m. hour last night.

NBC's "The Biggest Loser" hit a season-high among total viewers and dominated among adults 18-49 despite airing an hour later than usual. Airing opposite "Loser" at 10, CBS's annual undies special "Victoria's Secret Fashion Show" dipped 19 percent from last year in 18-49s.

"Loser" averaged a 3.7 18-49 rating from 9 to 11 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, including a 3.9 at 10, a full point higher than "Secret."

A 2.9 is still a decent rating, up 0.1 over what "The Good Wife" averaged in the slot last week. But "Secret" may have had a higher rating if it had aired against "The Jay Leno Show," NBC's usual 10 p.m. timeslot occupant, which averaged a mere 1.9 in the slot last week.

"Loser," which was bumped back an hour by President Barack Obama's 8 p.m. speech, tied its best 18-49 rating in three weeks and averaged 10 million total viewers, the best tally for any non-finale fall "Loser" episode in four years.

Numbers for the Obama speech will be released later today by Nielsen.

"Loser" lifted NBC to first for the night among 18-49s with a 3.2 average overnight rating and a 9 share. CBS was second at 2.4/7, Fox third at 2.1/6, ABC fourth at 1.6/4, Univision fifth at 1.4/4 and CW sixth at 0.9/3.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-three percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

Also, ratings for many of the shows that followed the Obama speech at 8:30 are approximate, as fast nationals measure timeslot and not actual program data.

At 8 p.m. NBC was first with a 2.1 for Obama and parts of a “Loser” rerun, followed by Fox with a 2.0 for Obama and the beginning of “So You Think You Can Dance.” CBS was third with a 1.9 for a full hour of Obama coverage, ABC fourth with a 1.6 for Obama and a repeat of “Modern Family,” Univision fifth with a 1.2 for “El Nombre del Amor” and CW sixth with a 1.1 for “90210.”

NBC was first again at 9 p.m. with a 3.6 for “Loser,” with CBS second with a 2.5 for a repeat of “NCIS.” Fox was third with a 2.2 for more “Dance,” ABC fourth with a 2.0 for an hour of “Scrubs,” Univision fifth with a 1.7 for “Sortilegio” and CW sixth with a 0.7 for “Melrose Place.”

At 10 p.m. NBC was first with a 3.9 for more “Loser,” while CBS finished second with a 2.9 for “Secret.” Fox was third with a 1.8 for the end of “Dance,” Univision fourth with a 1.4 for “Aqui y Ahora” and ABC fifth with a 1.2 for “The Forgotten.”

Among households, CBS led the night with a 6.9 average overnight rating and an 11 share. NBC was second at 5.9/9, ABC third at 3.5/6, Fox fourth at 3.4/5, Univision fifth at 2.0/3 and CW sixth at 1.3/2.
