NBC has tried out a steady stream of scripted programming on Friday nights without luck. Turns out the network should have been going unscripted.
New genealogy series "Who Do You Think You Are" improved in its second week and helped NBC to second place on Friday, just 0.1 behind leader CBS, according to Nielsen overnights.
"Who" averaged a 1.8 adults 18-49 rating, up 13 percent over a 1.6 for the previous week's debut and up 50 percent over the network's average for the 8 p.m. timeslot last year.
A 1.8 isn't a great rating, but on a Friday night it's pretty strong, especially for an on-the-cheap program about tracing celebrity ancestry. "Who" finished second in the slot to CBS's "Ghost Whisperer," the night's top show with a 1.9.
That boosted NBC to second place overall for the night, a week after tying CBS for first.
CBS averaged a 1.8 rating and 6 share, followed by NBC with a 1.7/6. ABC and Fox tied for third at 1.4/5, Univision was fifth at 1.2/4 and the CW placed sixth at 0.6/2.
At 8 p.m., CBS's "Ghost" led with the 1.9, followed by "Who" at 1.8. Univision's "Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe" placed third at 1.6, ABC's "Supernanny" was fourth at 1.4, Fox's "House" repeat fifth at 1.0 and the CW's "America's Next Top Model" repeat sixth at 0.7.
At 9 p.m., CBS maintained its lead with a 1.8 for "Medium." NBC's "Dateline NBC" and Fox's "Kitchen Nightmares" tied for second at 1.7, followed by Univision's "Corazon Salvaje" and ABC's "Supernanny" at 1.2. The CW's final half-hour of "Model" and a repeat of "High Society" were sixth at 0.5.
At 10 p.m., CBS's "Numb3rs" and the second hour of "Dateline" tied for first at 1.8. ABC's "20/20" was third at 1.7, and Univision fourth at 0.7.
Among households, CBS and NBC tied for the lead at 5.1/9, followed by ABC at 3.3/6, Fox at 2.2/4, Univision at 1.6/3 and the CW at 1.1/2.
