Beijing relief:
CBS's 'Flashpoint' rises

Canadian copper averages a 1.9 in 18-49s, up 19 percent

Aug 22, 2008

The Canadian cop drama “Flashpoint” showed enough promise in its debut that CBS moved it from Fridays to Thursdays last month. Last night it tied a season best, managing a big week-to-week jump even opposite NBC’s dominant Olympics.

“Flashpoint” averaged a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating at 10 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, tying a season high set in its premiere, when it aired at 10 p.m. Fridays.

That was up 18 percent over last week’s 1.6 average, and it placed second in the timeslot for the night, behind NBC’s Games coverage. There aren't many shows that have managed such gains over the last two weeks.

But “Flashpoint” may have benefited from a week-to-week falloff by the Olympics, which averaged a 9.4 at 10 p.m. last week and an 8.9 last night.

NBC came in first for the night among 18-49s with a 7.2 average overnight rating and a 21 share. CBS was second at 1.9/6, Univision third at 1.6/5, Fox fourth at 1.5/4, ABC fifth at 1.1/3 and CW sixth at 0.6/2.

Ratings for NBC and Fox are approximate as fast nationals measure 8 to 11 p.m. timeslot data and not actual program data. The Olympics lasted past 11 p.m., as did Fox’s preseason NFL game.

NBC began the night in the lead with a 5.1 at 8 p.m. for Olympics coverage, with CBS second with a 2.1 for “Big Brother.” Univision was third with a 1.9 for “Al Diablo con los Guapos,” Fox fourth with a 1.4 for the first hour of the game between San Francisco and Chicago, ABC fifth with a 0.9 for a repeat of “Ugly Betty” and CW sixth with a 0.6 for a “Smallville” rerun.

At 9 p.m. NBC extended its lead with a 7.6 for more Olympics, while Univision moved to second with a 1.8 for “Fuego en la Sangre.” CBS was third with a 1.7 for a repeat of “CSI,” Fox fourth with a 1.6 for football, ABC fifth with a 1.2 for a “Grey’s Anatomy” rerun and CW sixth with a 0.5 for a repeat of “Supernatural.”

NBC was first again at 10 p.m. with an 8.9 for Olympics, followed by CBS with a 1.9 for “Flashpoint.” Fox was third with a 1.5 for more football, Univision fourth with a 1.2 for “La Rosa de Guadalupe” and ABC fifth with a 1.1 for a repeat of “Private Practice.”

Among households, NBC led the night with a 13.7 average overnight rating and a 23 share. CBS was second at 4.6/8, Fox third at 3.1/5, ABC fourth at 2.4/4, Univision fifth at 2.0/3 and CW sixth at 1.1/2.
