for ABC's 'The River'

ABC's twisty new drama "The River" got off to an okay start last night, providing the network with its best ratings in nearly three months in its timeslot, though its rating dropped throughout the show, never a good sign.

"River" averaged a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating from 9 to 11 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, drawing ABC's best rating in the time slot in 11 weeks, since the season finale of "Dancing with the Stars."

Of course ABC's primary timeslot occupants during that span, "Celebrity Wife Swap" and "Body of Proof," aren't exactly hits, so bettering their ratings is not a huge achievement.

"River's" ratings fell by 0.1 in each half hour. The show started with a 2.5 at 9 p.m. and had slid to a 2.2 by 10:30 p.m., though it did manage to tie CBS for first place in the hour.

Elsewhere last night, CBS's 200th episode of "NCIS" was the night's top show with a 4.1, easily topping Fox's "Glee" in the hour. "Glee" averaged a 3.2, down 14 percent from last week's Michael Jackson tribute episode.

CBS was first for the night among 18-49s with a 3.1 average overnight rating and an 8 share. Fox was second at 3.0/8, ABC third at 2.4/6, NBC fourth at 2.0/5, Univision fifth at 1.6/4, CW sixth at 0.6/1 and Telemundo seventh at 0.5/1.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback, which includes shows replayed before 3 a.m. the night before. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Forty-three percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. CBS led with a 4.1 for "NCIS," followed by Fox with a 3.2 for "Glee." ABC was third with a 2.4 for an hour of "Last Man Standing," NBC fourth with a 2.1 for "The Biggest Loser," Univision fifth with a 1.7 for "Una Familia con Suerte," CW sixth with a 0.7 for "90210" and Telemundo seventh with a 0.6 for "Una Maid en Manhattan."

CBS was first again at 9 p.m. with a 3.1 for "NCIS: Los Angeles," while Fox remained second with a 2.8 for "New Girl" (3.5) and "Raising Hope" (2.2). ABC was third with a 2.5 for "River," NBC fourth with a 2.4 for more "Loser," Univision fifth with a 1.4 for "El Talisman," and CW and Telemundo tied for sixth at 0.5, CW for "Ringer" and Telemundo for "Flor Salvaje."

At 10 p.m. CBS and ABC tied for first at 2.2, CBS for "Unforgettable" and ABC for more "River." NBC and Univision tied for third at 1.6, NBC for "Parenthood" (falling to a series low) and Univision for "La Que No Podia Amar," with Telemundo fifth with a 0.4 for "Relaciones Peligrosas."

CBS also finished first for the night among households with a 10.1 average overnight rating and a 16 share. ABC was second at 4.7/7, Fox third at 4.1/6, NBC fourth at 3.7/6, Univision fifth at 1.9/3, CW sixth at 0.8/1 and Telemundo seventh at 0.7/1.
