In their first meeting of the summer, NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” squeaked past Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” last night.
“Talent” averaged a 3.1 adults 18-49 rating at 9 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, 0.2 ahead of “Dance.”
“Dance” usually skews younger than “Talent,” but the latter was airing just its second episode of the year, while “Dance” has been on for a month.
Whether “Talent” can maintain that lead in coming weeks, after the debut excitement has worn off, remains to be seen, but it’s a promising start for the show.
Less promising was the performance of ABC’s “I Survived a Japanese Game Show” in that same timeslot, probably the toughest on broadcast this summer.
“Game Show” averaged a mere 1.6 rating, well off from a 2.1 for its debut last week.
ABC’s controversial “Primetime” special focused on President Barack Obama’s healthcare proposal did even worse, managing just a 1.1 at 10 p.m. Republicans were angered over the special, which they dubbed an Obama infomercial.
As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-two percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.
Fox led the night among 18-49s with a 2.8 average overnight rating and a 9 share. NBC was second at 2.2/7, ABC third at 1.8/6, CBS fourth at 1.5/5, Univision fifth at 1.3/4 and CW sixth at 0.5/1.
ABC and Fox tied for the lead at 8 p.m., each with a 2.7 rating, ABC for “Wipeout” and Fox for “Dance.” NBC was third with a 1.5 for the season, and likely series, finale of “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here,” Univision fourth with a 1.2 for “Cuidado con el Angel,” CBS fifth with a 1.1 for repeats of “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and “Gary Unmarried” and CW sixth with a 0.5 for an “America’s Next Top Model” rerun.
NBC took the lead at 9 p.m. with a 3.1 for “Talent,” with Fox second with a 2.9 for more “Dance” and Univision third with a 1.7 for “Mañana Es para Siempre.” ABC and CBS tied for fourth at 1.6, ABC for “Game Show” and CBS for a repeat of “Criminal Minds,” with CW sixth with a 0.4 for a repeat of “Hitched or Ditched.”
At 10 p.m. NBC led again with a 2.0 for the series premiere of “The Philanthropist,” followed by CBS with a 1.7 for a repeat of “CSI: NY.” ABC and Univision tied for third that hour at 1.1, ABC for “Primetime” and Univision for “Don Francisco Presenta.”
Among households, NBC and Fox tied for first for the night, each with a 4.6 average overnight rating and an 8 share. CBS was third at 4.3/8, ABC fourth at 3.2/6, Univision fifth at 1.9/3 and CW sixth at 0.7/1.
