Air ball: 'Shaq Vs.'
misses the shot

It wasn’t a disaster, but it wasn’t a swish either. ABC’s new reality series “Shaq Vs.” put up low numbers for last night’s premiere, though it did manage to build on its lead-in against tough competition.

“Shaq” averaged a 1.7 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen overnights, tying with Fox’s “More to Love” for a distant fourth in the timeslot behind NBC, CBS and Univision.

Still, low ratings this summer are all relative. “Shaq” was ABC’s No. 1 show for the night and the highest-rated regularly scheduled show in the timeslot for the network this summer, several tenths ahead of “The Superstars,” which premiered earlier this summer.

And it did grow from its lead-in, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” which averaged a 1.4.

But “Shaq” finished well behind the night’s top shows on Fox, NBC and CBS.

Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen” tied a season high with a 3.4 rating at 8 p.m., also the night’s top-rated shoe. At 9, “Brother” tied “Talent” for the lead in the hour, posting a season-high 2.9 as viewers found out how contestant Chima Simone was booted.

Fox led the night among 18-49s with a 2.6 average overnight rating and an 8 share. NBC was second at 2.5/8, CBS third at 1.9/6, Univision fourth at 1.5/5, ABC fifth at 1.5/4 and CW sixth at 0.4/1.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-two percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. Fox was first with a 3.4 for “Kitchen,” followed by CBS with a 1.8 for a repeat of “NCIS” and NBC with a 1.5 for a “Talent” rerun. ABC and Univision tied for fourth at 1.4, ABC for “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” and Univision for “El Nombre del Amor,” with CW sixth with a 0.4 for a repeat of “90210.”

CBS and NBC tied for first at 9 p.m., each with a 2.9 rating, CBS for “Brother” and NBC for the first half of a new “Talent.” Univision was third with a 1.9 for “Mañana Es para Siempre.” ABC and Fox tied for fourth at 1.7, ABC for “Shaq Vs.” and Fox for “More to Love,” and the CW was sixth with a 0.3 for more “90210.”

At 10 p.m. NBC was first with a 3.1 for more “Talent,” with ABC second with a 1.3 for “Primetime.” CBS and Univision tied for third at 1.1, CBS for a repeat of “Medium” and Univision for “Aqui y Ahora.”

Among households, NBC was first for the night with a 5.9 average overnight rating and a 10 share. CBS was second at 4.6/8, Fox third at 3.4/6, ABC fourth at 3.1/5, Univision fifth at 1.9/3 and CW sixth at 0.6/1.
