A big bump for
'Teen Choice Awards'

Fox special averages a 3.8 rating in 12-17 viewers

Aug 5, 2008

Host Miley Cyrus and oft-honored band the Jonas Brothers, along with a dash of “Gossip Girl,” gave the “Teen Choice Awards” a big bump over last year among viewers 12-17.

Fox’s annual awards show averaged a 3.8 in the demo last night, according to Nielsen overnights, up 73 percent from last year’s 2.2 rating.

That also marked the biggest showing in four years in 12-17s, since 2004. This year’s show aired three weeks earlier than last year, in order to avoid the Olympics and political conventions.

Cyrus hosted the show, and the Jonas Brothers and CW’s “Gossip” cast were there to accept numerous awards. Those three are the hottest things going in teen entertainment right now, explaining this year’s big bump.

The show was also up 10 percent in total viewers, from 4 million to 4.4 million.

Otherwise, it was a rather slow night for originals on broadcast. The only network with all repeats, CBS, led the night among 18-49s with a 2.3 average overnight rating and a 7 share. NBC was second at 1.9/6, Univision third at 1.6/5, Fox fourth at 1.5/5, ABC fifth at 1.0/3 and CW sixth at 0.4/1.

At 8 p.m. CBS was first with a 2.2 average for repeats of “The Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met Your Mother,” followed by NBC with a 1.9 for the first hour of the “American Gladiators” finale. Univision was third with a 1.7 for “Al Diablo con los Guapos,” Fox fourth with a 1.5 for the first hour of “Teen,” ABC fifth with a 0.8 for “High School Musical: Get in the Picture” and CW sixth with a 0.4 for a “Gossip” rerun.

CBS led again at 9 p.m. with a 2.6 for repeats of “Two and a Half Men” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” while NBC held onto second with a 2.0 for another hour of “Gladiators.” Univision was third with a 1.9 for “Fuego en la Sangre,” Fox fourth with a 1.5 for more “Teen,” ABC fifth with a 0.9 for “Wanna Bet” and CW sixth with a 0.4 for a repeat of “One Tree Hill.”

At 10 p.m. CBS was first with a 2.1 for a repeat of “CSI: Miami,” with NBC second with a 1.9 for the finale of “Nashville Star.” Univision was third with a 1.3 for “Cristina” and ABC fourth with a 1.2 for “The Mole.”

CBS also finished first for the night among households with a 5.2 average overnight rating and a 9 share. NBC was second at 3.4/6, Fox third at 2.7/5, Univision fourth at 2.1/4, ABC fifth at 2.0/4 and CW sixth at 0.8/1.
