ABC's 'Deep End'
takes a deep dive

"FlashForward's" ratings fell off during the end of its run, but ABC will probably be eager to have that show back after taking a look at the numbers for its replacement.

"The Deep End," the new lawyer drama that has received loads of promotion over the past month, sank in its first outing, finishing fourth in its 8 p.m. timeslot and just barely beating the competing "The Vampire Diaries" on the CW.

"End" averaged a 1.8 adults 18-49 rating at 8 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, behind Fox, NBC and even CBS, which aired repeats in the hour.

It was up from a 1.4 for last week's ABC News special on Haiti but off 38 percent from the 2.9 that "FlashForward" has averaged in the slot. That show is on hiatus until spring.

"End," described as "Grey's Anatomy" meets "LA Law," got poor reviews, including from Media Life's Tom Conroy, who notes, "The writers clearly need some help with plotting."

But with "Grey's " and "Private Practice" the night's two highest-rated shows, ABC still managed to win the night.

ABC finished first for the night among 18-49s with a 3.4 average overnight rating and a 9 share. Fox was second at 3.1/8, CBS third at 2.8/8, NBC fourth at 2.2/6, and Univision and CW tied for fifth at 1.4/4.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-four percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. Fox was first with a season-high 3.5 for the surging “Bones,” followed by CBS with a 2.3 for back-to-back repeats of “The Big Bang Theory.” NBC was third with a 2.0 for “Community” (2.1) and “Parks and Recreation” (2.0), ABC fourth with a 1.8 for “End,” CW fifth with a 1.6 for “Diaries” and Univision fifth with a 1.3 for “Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe.”

ABC took the lead at 9 p.m. with a 4.6 for “Grey’s Anatomy,” while NBC moved to second with a 3.2 for “The Office” (3.7) and “30 Rock” (2.8). CBS was third with a 3.1 for “CSI,” Fox fourth with a 2.6 for “Fringe,” Univision fifth with a 1.9 for “Sortilegio” and CW sixth with a 1.3 for “Supernatural.”

At 10 p.m. ABC was first again with a 3.6 for “Private Practice,” with CBS second with a 3.1 for “The Mentalist.” NBC was third with a 1.4 for “The Jay Leno Show” and Univision fourth with a 1.0 for “Rosa de Guadalupe.”

CBS led the night among households with a 7.5 average overnight rating and a 12 share. ABC was second at 6.5/10, Fox third at 5.6/9, NBC fourth at 3.2/5, CW fifth at 2.0/3 and Univision sixth at 1.9/3.
