Texas had a bit of bad luck last night when quarterback Colt McCoy, a Heisman Trophy contender, was injured during the first quarter of the national championship game against Alabama.

Despite a late Longhorns comeback without McCoy, the Tide rolled to its first BCS title with a 37-21 victory that also gave ABC huge ratings.

The network averaged a 9.5 adults 18-49 rating and 24 share in primetime, according to Nielsen overnights, and 28.5 million total viewers.

Those numbers reflect only timeslot data and do not account for time zone differences, so they will likely change significantly when final data is released later today.

Last year's game averaged 26.8 million viewers on Fox, according to final data.

ABC absolutely dominated the competition, with the other networks airing mostly reruns against the BCS title game. CBS was second for the night among 18-49s at 2.1/5, NBC and Univision tied for third at 1.5/4, Fox fifth at 1.4/3 and CW sixth at 0.6/2.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Thirty-four percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

ABC led each hour of the night, beginning with an 8.5 at 8 p.m. for football pregame and the beginning of its BCS game, followed by CBS with a 1.9 for a repeat of “CSI.” Fox was third with a 1.7 for a “Bones” rerun, Univision fourth with a 1.6 for “En Nombre del Amor,” NBC fifth with a 1.5 for repeats of “Community” and “Parks and Recreation,” and CW sixth with a 0.7 for a “Vampire Diaries” rerun.

At 9 p.m. ABC was first with an 11.0 for football, with CBS second with a 2.3 for another “CSI” rerun. Univision was third with a 1.8 for “Sortilegio,” NBC fourth with a 1.7 for repeats of “The Office” and “30 Rock,” Fox fifth with a 1.0 for a repeat of “Fringe” and CW sixth with a 0.6 for a “Supernatural” repeat.

ABC was first again at 10 p.m. with a 9.2 for more football, while CBS remained second with a 2.2 for a repeat of “The Mentalist.” NBC was third with a 1.4 for “The Jay Leno Show” and Univision fourth with a 1.0 for “Rosa de Guadalupe.”

ABC also led the night among households with a 15.8 average overnight rating and a 24 share. CBS was second at 6.7/10, Fox third at 2.8/4, NBC fourth at 2.7/4, Univision fifth at 1.9/3 and CW sixth at 1.1/2.
