Moving into yet another new timeslot, ABC’s “Men in Trees” landed with a thud last night, becoming the night’s lowest-rated program on the Big Four networks and dimming hopes for the show’s renewal.

“Trees” averaged a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49, according to Nielsen overnights, ranking third in its timeslot behind a “CSI: NY” rerun on CBS and “Law & Order” on NBC.

It was just 0.1 ahead of the 1.6 average for first-year dud “Cashmere Mafia” last week, and the Anne Heche show drew a mere 5.7 million total viewers last night.

This could be the final chance for “Trees,” which, despite generally favorable reviews and a small but very loyal following among the women that ABC excels with, has never quite fit into the network’s schedule.

Last year, during its first season, “Trees” aired first on Fridays and later moved to Thursday behind “Grey’s Anatomy,” where it did well enough to warrant a second season. It debuted on Fridays once more last fall, where it aired in two timeslots and didn’t fare well in either, leading ABC to yank it until last night.

The show still has a stockpile of pre-strike episodes after saving a few from last year and only airing a handful last fall.

Meanwhile, Fox led the night among viewers 18-49 with an 8.9 average overnight rating and a 23 share. NBC was second at 2.6/7, ABC third at 2.4/6, CBS fourth at 2.2/6, Univision fifth at 1.6/4 and CW sixth at 1.5/4.

At 8 p.m. Fox was first with a 9.9 for the first hour of “American Idol,” with NBC second with a 2.2 for “Deal or No Deal” and ABC and CBS tied for third at 2.1, ABC for “Wife Swap” and CBS for “Big Brother.” CW was fifth with a 2.0 for “America’s Next Top Model,” which was up slightly from last week’s premiere in 18-49s and 18-34s, and Univision sixth with a 1.9 for “Al Diablo con los Guapos.”

Fox was first again at 9 p.m. with an 8.0 average for the end of “Idol” and an episode of “Back to You” (4.4, about even to the previous night’s airing), followed by ABC with a 3.3 for “Supernanny.” CBS was third with a 2.3 for a repeat of “Criminal Minds,” NBC fourth with a 2.2 for “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” Univision fifth with a 1.6 for “Pasion” and CW sixth with a season-high 1.0 for a repeat of “The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious.”

At 10 p.m. NBC took over first place with a 3.4 for “Law & Order,” while CBS moved up to second with a 2.3 for a repeat of “CSI: NY.” ABC was third with a 1.7 for “Men in Trees” and Univision fourth with a 1.1 for “Don Francisco Presenta.”

Among households, Fox finished first for the night with a 13.7 average overnight rating and a 21 share. NBC was second at 6.5/10, CBS third at 4.8/8, ABC fourth at 4.3/7, and Univision and CW tied for fifth at 1.9/3.
