ABC shows struggle
on Tuesday night

'Cougar Town' falls from last week's debut to a 1.7

Tuesday is turning into a night of the haves and the have-nots.

CBS and Fox are the haves; ABC is clearly, until "Dancing with the Stars" returns next month, a have-not.

The network had just one show with a rating above a 1.7 in adults 18-49 last night, according to Nielsen overnights, with "Last Man Standing" averaging a 2.2.

The rest of its lineup did poorly. "Cougar Town" fell slightly from last week's debut to a series-low 1.7, and lead-out "The River," which premiered to okay numbers a few weeks back, averaged a 1.7 as well.

The 10 p.m. drama "Body of Proof" posted a 1.4, which was actually up from last week's series low.

It's very possible that three of these shows – "Cougar," "River" and "Proof" – will get the axe in May, if not sooner, though "Man" seems a good bet to return for a second season.

CBS, meanwhile, pulled off a squeaker of a win over Fox on the night thanks to "NCIS," the evening's highest-rated program with a 3.8.

CBS posted a 2.9 average overnight rating and an 8 share in primetime. Fox was second at 2.8/7, NBC third at 2.1/5, ABC fourth at 1.7/4, Univision fifth at 1.4/4, and Telemundo and the CW tied for sixth at 0.5/1.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback, which includes shows replayed before 3 a.m. the night before. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Forty-three percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. CBS was first with a 3.8 for "NCIS," followed by Fox with a 2.9 for "Glee." NBC was third with a 2.2 for "The Biggest Loser," ABC fourth with a 2.0 for "Man" (2.2) and "Cougar Town" (1.7), Univision fifth with a 1.6 for "Una Familia con Suerte," Telemundo sixth with a 0.6 for "Una Maid en Manhattan" and the CW seventh with a 0.4 for a "Hart of Dixie" rerun.

CBS led again at 9 p.m. with a 2.9 for "NCIS: Los Angeles," with Fox second with a 2.6 for "New Girl" (3.0) and "Raising Hope" (2.2). NBC was third with a 2.4 for more "Loser," ABC fourth with a 1.7 for "The River," Univision fifth with a 1.3 for "El Talisman" and the CW and Telemundo tied for sixth at 0.5, CW for "Ringer" and Telemundo for "Flor Salvaje."

At 10 p.m. CBS was first with a 1.9 for "Unforgettable," while NBC moved to second with a 1.7 for "Parenthood." ABC and Univision tied for third at 1.4, ABC for "Body of Proof" and Univision for "La Que No Podia Amar," with Telemundo fifth with a 0.4 for "Relaciones Peligrosas."

CBS was also first for the night among households with a 9.7 average overnight rating and a 15 share. Fox was second at 3.9/6, NBC third at 3.8/6, ABC fourth at 3.7/6, Univision fifth at 1.4/4, CW sixth at 0.8/1 and Telemundo seventh at 0.7/1.
