For the second straight week CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" outdrew Fox's "American Idol" in their shared half hour, though "Idol" surged in its second half hour in order to tie "Bang" as the night's top show.

"Bang" averaged a 5.4 at 8 p.m., according to Nielsen overnights, while "Idol" averaged a 5.0 in that half hour. It was the second week in a row that "Bang" has beaten "Idol" in the slot, though its winning margin was smaller.

"Idol" was up slightly versus last week's 4.9, while "Bang" was down slightly from a season-high 5.5 last week.

"Idol" jumped to a 5.8 in its second half and finished with a 5.4 average on the night, tying "Bang."

The hit singing competition was down 2 percent from last week, its smallest week-to-week dip yet, though it was off 28 percent from a 7.5 the same night last year.

"The Finder," the "Bones" spinoff that follows "Idol," slid 14 percent week to week against much stronger competition at 9 p.m. It averaged a 2.4, which was still its second-best rating yet.

All the networks aired originals last night, the first night of February sweeps, after a plethora of reruns last week.

Fox was first for the night among 18-49s with a 3.9 average overnight rating and an 11 share. CBS was second at 3.5/9, ABC third at 2.5/7, Univision and NBC tied for fourth at 1.5/4, the CW sixth at 0.9/2 and Telemundo seventh at 0.5/1.

As a reminder, all ratings are based on live-plus-same-day DVR playback, which includes shows replayed before 3 a.m. the night before. Seven-day DVR data won’t be available for several weeks. Forty-three percent of Nielsen households have DVRs.

At 8 p.m. Fox led with a 5.4 for "Idol," followed by CBS with a 4.4 for "Bang" (5.4) and "Rob" (3.4). ABC was third with a 1.8 for "Wipeout," NBC fourth with a 1.5 for "30 Rock" (1.3) and "Parks and Recreation" (1.8), Univision fifth with a 1.3 for "El Talisman," CW sixth with a 1.2 for "The Vampire Diaries" and Telemundo seventh with a 0.6 for "Una Maid en Manhattan."

ABC took the lead at 9 p.m. with a 3.5 for "Grey's Anatomy," while CBS remained in second place with a 3.3 for "Person of Interest." Fox was third with a 2.4 for "Finder," NBC fourth with a 2.3 for "The Office" (2.7) and "Up All Night" (1.8), Univision fifth with a 1.7 for "La Que No Podia Amar," CW sixth with a 0.7 for "The Secret Circle" and Telemundo seventh with a 0.5 for "Flor Salvaje."

CBS moved to first at 10 p.m. with a 2.8 for "The Mentalist," with ABC second with a 2.3 for "Private Practice." Univision was third with a 1.4 for "Rosa de Guadalupe," NBC fourth with a 0.8 for "The Firm" and Telemundo fifth with a 0.5 for "Relaciones Peligrosas."

Among households, CBS led the night with an 8.6 average overnight rating and a 14 share. Fox was second at 7.1/11, ABC third at 4.8/8, NBC fourth at 2.3/4, Univision fifth at 1.9/3, CW sixth at 1.5/2 and Telemundo seventh at 0.7/1.
