to cable news sites CNN, MSNBC and Fox draw 56 million unique visitors Nov 6, 2008 The three major cable news networks weren’t just winners on election night, when they combined to average an astounding 27.2 million viewers. They were also the go-to destinations online Tuesday. CNN.com, MSNBC.com and Foxnews.com were the three of the five biggest draws in the media and political web sites category on election day, according to data gathered by web tracking company Hitwise. Yahoo News placed first overall with 0.72 percent of all visits to the category, 99 percent better than the previous Tuesday. CNN.com led the cable news networks and was second overall with 0.61 percent of all visits to the category, up 162 percent versus the previous Tuesday. The network said it attracted a record 30 million unique visitors, more than doubling its previous record of 13.4 million on Super Tuesday earlier this year. The site generated 282.5 million page views, peaking with 35.6 million during the 9 p.m. hour. CNN Political Ticker also placed in the top 15, according to Hitwise. MSNBC.com drew 0.4 percent of all traffic to the media and political sites Tuesday, according to Hitwise, up 123 percent over the previous week and ranking third. The network said it drew more than 20 million unique visitors and generated 250 million page views, double the amount the site saw on election day in 2004. Both were record totals for the 12-year-old site. Another MSNBC site, MSN Election '08, ranked 20th on Hitwise's list. Foxnews.com drew 0.22 percent of all category visits on Tuesday, according to Hitwise, up 92 percent from the previous week and finishing fifth overall, just behind Google News at 0.23 percent. Nielsen Online estimated Fox News’ Tuesday audience at 5.76 million unique visitors, up 46 percent from the previous Tuesday. The network also had a separate site, Foxnews.com Elections, that drew a 0.09 percent share, ranking eighth overall. The Drudge Report, The New York Times’ NYTimes.com, USAToday.com and ABCNews.com rounded out Hitwise’s top 10. According to Nielsen Online, overall traffic to the current events and global news category spiked 27 percent on election day compared to the previous week. Page views were up 103 percent, while time per person spent viewing sites in the category rose 61 percent. But news sites weren’t the only ones getting an election day buzz. Hitwise notes that Facebook’s market share jumped 11 percent compared to the previous week, to 1.53 percent, while Twitter soared 58 percent, to 0.02 percent. Voters, especially younger ones, and news organizations used the social networking tools on election day to keep friends and readers informed of election developments. Meanwhile, Barack Obama won the final day of online campaigning as well as the electoral college. Nielsen Online reported that Obama’s site received 1.2 million unique visitors Tuesday compared to 479,000 for McCain.
