Trench warfare among the celeb titles
The shakeout has been a long time coming

After a flush of new celebrity titles in recent years and surges in circulation for the category, media people figured it was only a matter of time before a shakeout winnowed out the weaker titles. And just four months ago, Premiere was folded by Hachette.
The big question has been: Who's next?
But judging by the latest circulation numbers from the Audit Bureau of Circulations, it looks like all the remaining titles are in for a long fight.
Overall celeb circulation growth has slowed for the six-month period ending June 30 and some titles are down, such as TV Guide. But yet other titles are up, such as OK!, the British import, which launched in summer 2005 with a commitment to spend $100 million to establish itself in the U.S.
No less important, advertising remains strong for the celebrity category, with ad pages up for the same six-month period, by nearly 6 percent for the category. And some of the strongest page gains were by those titles that saw circulation dips.
Total circulation for the six main celeb-focused titles--Us, People, Star, In Touch, OK! and Life & Style--was up 4.2 percent over the same period last year, from 9.55 million to 9.95 million.
The biggest gainer for the period was OK!, with circulation up 54.3 percent compared to the same six months in 2006, with especially strong gains in subscriptions, up 105.4 percent, to 390,215. Its ad pages were up 42 percent through this June.
Continuing to show strong growth on both fronts are the two Bauer publications, In Touch and Life & Style, with circulation gains of 10.2 percent and 6.8 percent. Ad pages were up 31 percent and 52 percent.
Meanwhile, TV Guide was down 12.2 percent, to 3,265,189, with the biggest dropoff in newsstand sales in the entertainment category, down 26 percent, but its ad pages were up 30 percent through June.
In a survey of Media Life readers back in March, nearly 80 percent believed a shakeout was coming for the celeb titles, and readers thought the most vulnerable title was OK!, as the most recent entry. People was voted the strongest title in the field.
