Stronger fourth
quarter lifts magazines


Consumer titles end 2010 flat to 2009 in ad pages

Yet another media category ended 2010 on a more positive note after a dismal 2009.

Magazine pages were essentially flat during last year, capping a year in which they improved steadily, with fourth quarter marking the third consecutive quarterly gain.

Full-year ad pages were down 0.1 percent, to 169,633.57, compared to a brutal 25.9 percent decline in 2009, according to figures released yesterday by the Publishers Information Bureau.

Full-year ad revenue rose 3.1 percent, the first time since 2007 that a year has ended in positive territory, rising to $20,083,795,460.

Fourth quarter was up 3.5 percent in ad pages, to 52,257.07, compared to an increase of 3.6 percent during third quarter. Second quarter was up nearly 1 percent.

Six of 12 ad categories were up during 2010, led by automotive with a 16.9 percent increase after falling 40.5 percent in 2009, mirroring auto increases in other media last year as well.

Toiletries and cosmetics, the largest category with 18,060.47 ad pages last year, had the second-biggest gains at 11.6 percent, followed by financial, insurance and real estate, up 9.3 percent.

Public transportation, hotels and resorts had the biggest decline, down 9.5 percent for the year, followed by direct response products, off 9.3 percent.

During fourth quarter, eight of 12 ad categories were up, with food and food products, media, direct response, and public transportation, hotels and resorts the only ones still in the red.

Among the 25 magazine categories tracked by Media Life, 20 showed gains in ad pages, with only five showing declines. That's a dramatic change from the depth of the recession when virtually all categories were down.

The big gainers in 2010 were bridal, up 22.6 percent, science and technology, up 17.3 percent, epicurean, up 14.2 percent, parenting up 12.4 percent, fashion, up 11.4 percent, and personal finance, up 10 percent.
