Some titles are up,
defying the trend


Hispanic and business titles are reporting ad page gains

Though magazines had a rough third quarter, with ad pages down 5.6 percent compared to last year, according to the Publishers Information Bureau, some magazine categories are still in positive territory year to date.

Four categories are doing particularly well: Hispanic, shelter, fashion and business titles.

The boom for Hispanic magazines is not particularly surprising.

The four titles in the category are up 21.9 percent year-to-date in ad pages, the most of any category tracked by Media Life, and it comes amidst a general boom for Hispanic media.

After last year's Census confirmed that the Hispanic population is growing faster than any other group in the U.S., advertisers were eager to get their message in front of these consumers, including many brands that had not reached out to the Latino community before.

So the rise in ad pages at Hispanic magazines is to be expected. What's surprising is the rise in the other three categories, which suffered mightily during the recession.

Shelter titles are up 7.1 in ad pages year to date. The category underwent a serious thinning out during the recession, with nearly a half-dozen titles getting shut down, including O at Home, Country Home and Cottage Living.

That may have strengthened the remaining titles, however, because they're facing fewer competitors for ad dollars.

Fashion has also seen a notable bump this year, up 4.5 percent. This category was understandably walloped by the recession, when people had fewer dollars to spend on extras like clothes and accessories, and even fewer to spend on magazines about those things.

In 2009, fashion ad pages declined 28.9 percent.

But this year sales for the crucial September issues, the fall fashion preview editions, were healthy. In Style had its biggest September issue ever, with 431 ad pages, and category leader Vogue was up 9 percent, to 584, in a sign that advertisers believe consumers are ready to start spending on fashion again.

Finally, business has long been a bellwether category for the magazine industry, with its ups and downs mirroring the health of the medium itself.

And business has actually gotten stronger as the year went long, in contrast to most categories. During the first half of the year, ad pages were up 5 percent. Through third quarter they're even stronger, up 5.9 percent.

Three magazines are up double-digit percentages, including Bloomberg Businessweek, which was revamped under its new owner more than a year ago.

But business is likely still benefiting from comparisons to a still-soft 2010. The truth is that even if the business category maintains a steady but modest single-digit percentage improvement each year, it will be years before it matches the ad pages seen a decade ago.

Meanwhile, of the 24 total categories measured by Media Life, 12 saw gains and 12 saw declines.

Parenting saw the biggest declines, down 11.6 percent in ad pages through third quarter, with epicurean titles down the second-most, 9.8 percent.
